This revision of President's Wives: The Lives of 44 American Women of Strength (1989)presents the lives of 47 women who were either First Ladies during their husbands' tenures as president or were married to men who were president but not at the time of their presidency. Hannah Van Buren and Jane Wyman both influenced their husbands but were never First Ladies.
From Martha Washington to Laura Bush, this volume presents sketches, ranging in length from 2 pages on Caroline Fillmore to 10 pages on Louisa Adams. Each entry discusses family and educational background, courtship and marriage, and activities as First Lady and in the years that followed. After the profiles, a bibliography provides additional resources.
Students and other researchers will prefer titles such as Salem's American First Ladies (2006) and Facts On File's First Ladies: A Biographical Dictionary (2005). Wives of the American Presidents is more chatty in tone, and often more generous with small personal details about the women it covers (for example, Lucy Ware Webb Hayes once caught a 15-pound trout; Julia Gardiner Tyler had an Italian greyhound as a pet).
