Almost as Engrossing as it is Frustrating

An important resource for experienced and serious cooks, this cookbook is simultaneously engrossing and infuriating. Organized in a manner that follows the structure of Ducasse's actual cooking school in three large divisions -- Easy, Medium, and Difficult, there's no easy upfront way to scan the recipes by content. I mean, how many times does one sit down and say, "I think i'd like a plate of something of intermediate difficulty as the main course for this party."? By similar token there are thousands of photos, but the vast majority are not much larger than enthusiastic postage stamp commemoratives, and the reproduction and relatively substantial distance from which the photos are often taken makes it very difficult to figure out what they are presenting unless you study the text closely and try to work backwards to see what the photo might be.

And the text, while precise, is often not terribly clear. Do you easily visualize what it means to say, "Overturn a deep container on parchment paper. Arrange the skewers on top of the overturned container, letting their ends extend past both sides."?

The indexes are helpful but also opaque. That quotation above is from a recipe for Chocolate Caramel Chestnuts. Trying to find it to come back to it for this review, I recalled that it was a chestnut paste confection, but little else. I could skim the entire book, or perhaps the Difficult section (since I recalled that as well), but looking in the Alphabetical index I got nowhere because the primary ingredient (chestnut) is not the first word. So there's an index by type of dish. But is this a Dessert & Pastry? Or a Dessert, Plated? or a Dessert, Shared? Or a Confectionery?

Well, there's an Index by Ingredient. But it doesn't zero in as finely as Chestnut Paste, so you have to settle for Chestnut. When you go there all it lists are three page numbers, without any names. There are also indexes by cooking utensil and by cooking time.

There is no Foreword or Afterword, no description of the book's strategy or goals; indeed no description of who wrote it (within the book there are four chefs' b biographies at the very end, near the copyright information, none of whom is in fact Alain Ducasse; and almost all of the recipes include chefs' tips (presumably from one of these four).

As an accompaniment to courses at Ducasse's cooking school, it makes a great documentation. And it makes quite a wonderful resource if you're willing to sit down and simply read it even though there is nothing anecdotal or engaging about the prose style. You can find many recipes worth trying, and perhaps make a list of them so that as occasions that might suit one or another arise you can tickle your memory and try one or more of them out.

I'm really glad I bought it, though it's incredibly frustrating that this very same collection of recipes could be so much more useful if presented in a different manner. And it's surely no school all by itself. The basic techniques section comes in an Appendix at the end. The recipes as presented don't connect in a way that invites you to generalize skill or experience acquisition if you simply cook them in order (each of the three sections is organized around category of dish not around instructional goal; but without a Table of Contents for each section it's hard even to see that that's what is going on.

The price of this book is pretty hefty, but that's only the start of the commitment you need to make in order to get the most out of owning it.

A few examples showing the diversity of applications may include: architecture and building design e.g. air conditioning and cooling systems; solar heating system design and use; solar power generation; weather and climate prediction models; evaporation and irrigation; calculation of water requirements for crops; monitoring plant growth and disease control; skin cancer research.

Solar radiation data must be provided in a variety of forms to suit these applications. The radiation reaching the upper atmosphere of the Earth is a quantity rather constant in time. But the radiation reaching some point on Earth surface is random in nature. The main cause is the fact that various gases within the atmosphere absorb solar radiation at different wavelengths, and clouds and dust also affect it.

There are two ways to obtaining solar radiation data at ground level: by measurement and by modelling. The book will facilitate the calculation of solar radiation required by engineers, designers and scientists and, as a result, will increase the access to needed solar radiation data.

Fantastic Advice, And Leading By Example

*FULL DISCLOSURE* The author has been a consulting client of mine for several years, and mentions that fact in this book.

Seth Godin titled one of his books, "All Marketers Are Liars", and then pointed out on page 15 of the book that of course "I wasn't being completely truthful with you when I named this book. Marketers aren't liars."

Felicia Slattery has done the same thing here. She has brilliantly appeared controversial with her title to get attention, yet actually, in this book, she simply renames the elevator speech as a "mini-introduction," and teaches the reader how to create an effective one, as well as exactly when and where to use it.

Being a master communicator, networker and speaker herself, Felicia also shares extremely valuable tips on how to do all three of those much more effectively than most businesspeople do now. She encourages and instructs the reader on precisely what to do when meeting peers and prospects instead of what they most likely currently do, which is simply spitting out the dreaded canned "elevator speech."

I really wish everyone would read this book. I get tired of being "dumped on" when meeting new people at various events. I'm afraid to ask people what they do because I open myself up to a canned response that makes no attempt to create a business relationship.

Felicia's approach is a dramatic improvement - she offers a refreshing approach to building a business relationship with new people. Rather than repeating a tired elevator speech that likely scares off most people, this book teaches techniques and systems to actually connect with people. And, Felicia reminds us that our focus is on the other person (not ourselves).

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. This is a very *unique* book in terms of contents and approach. Unlike most other books in the area of wireless communications, its approach is rather from electromagnetic theories (or physics), which is particularly interesting. Also, noise is explained in detail based on antenna temperature. Chapters 6 and 7 are also interesting. For example, the concept of LOS horizon should be useful in the research for long-range communications. Finally, as in this book, it is always good to have examples at the end of each chapter. ... this book might be possibly considered as supplemental material for teaching certain courses ... . Also, it is an excellent monograph for researchers in the area of wireless communications.

What is there to like in "Physical Principles of Wireless Communications"? A lot!

The preface paints the landscape: "Wireless communications is based on the launching, propagation, and detection of electromagnetic waves usually at radio or microwave frequencies." By the end of the book, you'll have covered short-range, medium range and long-range forms of wireless communication. You'll start with the physical principles, gain insight into the supporting theory and equations, and learn examples of how this works in real world applications.

The author begins with a brief but fascinating tour of the history with "An Introduction to Modern Wireless Communications." The chapter is beautifully written and nicely laid out with photos and graphics. The author includes stories of some of the great early physicists and their experiments that led to modern day technology. The breakthroughs of people like Marconi are brought to life in a very memorable way. (Marconi's entrepreneurial inventions enabled shore to ship communications and led to the unanticipated discovery of the ionosphere.) Fascinating background ....

Next, Dr. Granatstein winds his way through a noisy century of scientific and engineering discoveries in radio. You quickly catch up with today's wireless technologies in cell phones, local area networks and satellite communication systems all have grown out of these fundamental principles.

Chapters 3 and 4 present mutually-reinforcing chapters on "Antennas" and "Antenna Arrays". I always wondered how antennas worked - this explains it well. Chapter 5, "Radio Frequency (RF) Wave Propagation" helps you think about propagation challenges - "reflection, refraction, absorption, multipath phase interference and diffraction." These are real world problems for deployments.

By the time you reach chapter 7, you'll start to realize the level of math required to master this subject - this chapter is packed with all sorts of equations.

This book explains the basics of how signals are created, transmitted, and received. But it rapidly accelerates into more advanced territory. The equations of electromagnetic radiation will challenge even the most determined. On the other hand, the figures and graphics are crystal clear and easily accessible to even the most casual reader.

In addition to being full of theory, this book is well populated with practical descriptions of how theory plays out in practice. Simple diagrams convey common material. Figures in chapter 5 depict the basic geometries of waves propagation. Graphics in chapter 6 nicely and simply describe the operation of wireless microwave bridges.

The author is a true expert on his subject. He has a Ph.D in electrical engineering and held positions at Bell Labs, the Naval Research Lab, and conducted decades of research and teaching in a university setting. He has studied, researched, practiced, taught, and now written about the subject. This is as authoritative as an author can be.

The text itself emerged from teaching material to senior EE students, grad students, and engineers working in communication companies. In less than 250 pages of text, the author conveys an important body of knowledge that has been collected over roughly the past 150 years. This book could easily be used in a classroom setting, as a main text or supplemental reading.

Now I see why people think teachers don't deserve more money!

As a sixth grade writing teacher I would be appalled if one of my students wrote something that was this poorly written. Obviously, this principal was dead wrong and should have retired long ago. However the author writes like a primary aged student and her setting sounds eerily similar to Deer Park ISD, right down to the mention of Center Street and the oil refineries at the edge of town. Word of cheating teachers and administrators needs to get out but doing it in a professional sounding manner will get the author taken more seriously.

An utter disappointment. Don't say you weren't warned.

I have never written an online review, but this book was so bad I feel the need to sound the alarms. Don't say you haven't been warned!

Rosanne went to the same high school as me, so when she set out a facebook notification publicizing her newly released novel, I took the bait. The synopsis sounded interested, so despite the negative reviews I bought it. What a mistake and a total waste of my time. Luckily, we're only talking 3 hours since I found myself skimming much of it out of shear boredom. This book is poorly written, has no plot, no character development, nothing to grab your attention. It seemed more along the lines of what I would have written on a note that I passed to a friend during my 7th grade history. Lots of pettiness and name calling. Let's throw in some inexplicable gossip at the end, which I assume was needed to reach the required number of words/pages.

The only thing I found of any use at all, was her brief description of her time on Maui. This was totally unrelated to the story but it did give me some ideas about what I can do on my upcoming trip to the island.

I notice that the author has been promoting this book at book-signings across the Houston area. Is she so naive not to realize that she shouId be embarrassed to have her name associated with this effort? If this is an example of the product of our public schools, God help us all.

Half Dimensional

I have heard of books being one dimensional but this is the first time I have read one that would have to work hard just to be one dimensional. It is ok to have bad guys but for crying out loud author, at least give us a slight inkling of what drives them. The childish name calling was a waste of time. The plot was disjointed and confused. I realize this book was self-published (score one for the real publishers for not accepting this) but come on have a little pride and maybe some introspection.
