Teaching by Example

Teaching by Example-Henry Ware's book is an eloquent discussion of extemporaneous preaching. Ware's prose is so alive that he makes the reader think she/he is in the presence of a great extemporaneous preacher. He successfully shows that this art gives life to preaching in ways that written discourses do not. Yet, he is clear that extemporaneous preaching requires serious study and training of the mind. He chides laziness and urges that success in this form of preaching is a result of sincere commitment to self-development, and devotion of one's heart to the promotion of religious faith. But it is important to add that the way Ware writes makes the book useful and an asset to, not just preachers, but anyone interested in public speaking.

There is much wisdom for preachers here.

Henry Ware offered many hints that are wise and helpful for preaching extemporaneously. One of the most fascinating remarks that he made is that almost everyone is eloquent regarding subjects that they are passionate about.

There is a lot of misunderstanding about this style of preaching and at one time I did not see it's value, but now I'm more inclined to use this approach because I understand the positive aspects of it.
