Worthy of the Title

Everyone engaged in functional verification of digital hardware designs should read this book. It truly is comprehensive (which means that it can't go into depth on everything), but there is a very good amount of depth on most of the topics that should be covered by such a book, as much depth as 704 pages would allow.

This book is not about languages but about concepts, which are more important. Having said this, HDLs, HVLs and programming languages are used for illustration. Such concepts include re-use strategies for verification components (although the essential topic of revision control is sadly only mentioned in passing), formal verification and escape analysis.

I'm troubled by the very short Acknowledgments section. The authors were fortunate to have Scott Taylor as a reviewer. I worked with Scott on Compaq's Alpha microprocessor team and he is very talented. However, there are quite a few mistakes in the book and some paragraphs that could have been written more clearly. The authors would have benefited from more peer review. For example, Wolfgang Roesner and I were together at IBM on the POWER6 microprocessor in 2004 and 2005, but he never asked me for help!

At Cosmic Horizon, I had been working alone (until recently) on verification of the Sputnik microprocessor. For assistance in debugging the integer multiplication unit, I found it useful to create a cycle-accurate reference model. Working alone, I was forced to come up with many such ideas on my own, so I became curious about how other verification experts think. I bought the book to learn about that. Yes, I had worked at IBM myself, but I hadn't experienced everything while I was there, and I wanted to solidify in my mind why we did things the way we did. Since reading CFV, I have begun to morph Cosmic Horizon's FSS product according to some of the book's better ideas. For example, the test case database no longer contains expected results. Instead, I am developing a cycle-ignorant (my idea, necessary for architectural verification) reference model to generate expected results on-the-fly.

I was attracted to this language-nonspecific book written by three IBM microprocessor verification engineers because I focus on microprocessors (and would like to return to IBM), but the book successfully remains general enough to apply to non-microprocessor digital hardware designs as well. As I said, everyone should read this book.

Thus, an account of the photoreceptors is followed by a consideration of retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration; an explanation of the retina's function is followed by details of glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

The authors begin with the cornea and lens, which project an image on the light-sensitive elements inside the eye, the photoreceptors, and how that process can be compromised by such disorders as cataracts and corneal disease. They go on to describe, among other things, how the photoreceptors capture light; retinal and visual cortical anatomy and physiology; and higher level visual processing that leads to perception. Cortical disorders such as amblyopia are discussed as well as specific deficits such as the inability to recognize faces, colors, or moving objects. Finally, they survey the evolution of our knowledge of vision, and speculate about future advances.

Combs offers a practical guidebook for coping with setbacks and loss. Combs (Worst Enemy, Best Teacher, 2005, etc.) uses her extensive experience with cross-cultural conflict resolution to explore ways to survive tough times, even if they feel like conflicts “with the gods.” Although her expertise is evident, she avoids unnecessary jargon and offers down-to-earth, realistic advice that can be used in most difficult situations. Her humor and the sensibleness of her suggestions elevate this work above many in the self-help genre; not only is it useful, it’s a pleasure to read. Combs makes the innovative argument that people may be using excellent techniques to cope with grief, but they’ll still likely fail if they’re using those techniques at the wrong time. Thus, the organization of the book divides difficult times into four seasons, emphasizing that the best coping strategies for one season are not necessarily appropriate for the other seasons. The cycle begins with autumn, when things that have been cherished or people who have been loved “fall” away. Autumn is also the season for envisioning positive consequences, perhaps using a mantra or prayer to increase focus on those potential outcomes. And although American culture emphasizes action and confronting problems head-on, Combs cautions that during winter, people need to rest and gather strength. In spring, celebration and ritual are important in order to mark the ending of one phase of life and the transition to another. Summer represents the cycle’s end, when people are ready to move forward from their difficult circumstances and re-engage fully in life and relationships. In her discussion of each season, Combs offers specific recommendations for how to best cope with the emotions and tasks of that season. She provides multiple examples from countries and cultures, and she enlivens the text further with quotations from people of various ages, ethnicities, eras and professions. The uplifting conclusion is both a summary and inspiration. A useful grief guide with groundbreaking ideas, expert advice and a compassionate tone.

She provides leadership and conflict strategies as a management consultant, coach, mediator and professor. Combs has worked with a variety of corporate, government and NGO clients including Aveda Corporation, Montana State University, the US Forest Service, US Postal Service, IBM and Landmine Survivors Network. Dr. Combs is a core instructor in Montana State University’s Leadership Fellows Certificate Program. Excellent guide for the journey

Thriving Through Tough Times is a wonderful metaphorical journey and guide through the more difficult times in our lives. Ms. Combs makes the journey elegant and simple to follow by connecting each part of the process to the seasons, and includes very specific, concrete suggestions for each stage. She backs everything up with stories from her life and work. My favorite chapter shares rituals for marking the letting go of a particularly challenging phase of our lives, which helps us move forward with all of our energy once again. I recommend this book to anyone dealing with any difficulties - minor or major.

The realistic optimism in Deidre Comb's book acknowledges the pain of tough times but provides encouragement and time-tested methods for coming through them stronger than ever. Her useful methods for dealing with the four seasons of tough times transmit the wisdom that our modern culture has often lost. She provides guidance for transitions, and makes it clear that no one needs to go through life's difficult phases alone. Her voice is compassionate, thoughtful, encouraging, and wise, with an engaging twist of humor. This is a book to re-read regularly, in preparation for the next tough time.

'Tsvetayeva is one of the great poets of the century and David McDuff's translations are very good. This is all the more remarkable because, like the poems they translate, they rhyme. There are overlaps with Elaine Feinstein's excellent but unrhyming translations of the same poet, but not too many. McDuff conveys Tsvetyeva's commitment to poetry's musical force, Feinstein substitutes a beautifully nuanced syntax for music; Tsvetayeva shines and appals in both' - Martin Dodsworth, Guardian

'It must be said right away that those who want to have an inkling of what Tsvetayeva is actually like, and that includes her form, her rhyme, and the tone of that accompanies form and rhyme, will have to go to McDuff. Readers may find that Feinstein comes across more fluently, but that fluency is not Tsvetaevan. Although generally less well known here than Pasternak, Akhmatova and Mandelstam, Tsvetaeva is counted by some critics as the greatest of these four major poets of postrevolutionary Russia. However, as veteran translator McDuff indicates in his introduction, the sounds of Russian poetrywhich to this day remains formally traditional in its use of rhyme and metercan never be captured in English. Further, Tsvetaeva presents a particularly difficult problem to the translator because her transcendent reputation rests precisely on the aural values of her verse. That said, McDuff must be congratulated for his brave attempt to reproduce those formal qualities. If we cannot have Tsvetaeva herself, these stand on their own as creditable English-language poems. The selection represents the entire scope of her remarkable career from her simple and charming early lyrics, first published in 1910 when she was 18, through those recounting her privations and hardships during the years of upheaval in Russia, to the poignant poems written in exile after 1922. It includes all her major long poems, such as the stunning Poem of the End. Although it is unclear whether Tsvetaeva was officially ostracized on her own account or because of the political actions of her husband Sergey Efron, her poems are heart-rending in view of her tragic life and eventual suicide. Love, the loss of youth, poetry and the Motherland are the core subjects of her poems, which are infused with high passion and a heroic tenacity of spirit. For non-Russian speakers, this volume is a new window on poetry in the Stalinist era.

Terrible Translations

Finestein's translations are so awful, it is no wonder that few English speakers want to know who Tsvetaeva is. She loses the rhythm, rhyme, literary devices, and everything for which Tsvetaeva's poetry is so loved. The duality of meanings and word play is also completely lost. Try Angela Livingstone's translations - they are excellent.

Poems by a reliable witness

Marina Tsvetaeva was born in Moscow in 1892, published her first poems at 18, and was married with two children when the Russian Revolution began. She endured numerous hardships -- one of her children died of malnutrition -- and a period of exile. She returned to Russia in 1939, but was so beset by her circumstances that she committed suicide in 1941. These passionate and autobiographical poems are deep and important. I don't know Russian, so cannot comment on the translation. From them one learns about Tsvetaeva the artist: her subjects are love and transformation, nature, poetry, love, and her complicated, exasperating country -- and, later, the bleakness which enveloped her. Poetry was serious business in Russia, and this poet was one of the greats.

Art in life

Read this book! and read about her life. She witnessed so much darkness and her words open up these experiences, lay them bare. I really wonder what her writing would have been if she had lived a different life, one without so much tragedy. She also recognized, as did Virginia Woolfe, that it is difficult for women to write amidst the responsibilities of everyday life -- "I have no time to think . . . I have only ever been myself in notebooks . . . for all my life I have been leading a child by the hand." Her work stays with you long after the book closes.

Hi readers, I have read various books on Qabala. Ted Andrews has brought the Qabala to people in a way that is easier to read and study the Qablaistic system. This book further expands on the path ways on more details on the sephiras and the cards (Archetypes), the knowledge of them, the caution to areas to stay away from (the pit falls)and more on Daath how and why to take caution with Daath. This book gives more insight on how to expand your empowerment and initiation, to really gain the knowledge to each Saphiras and the Cards ,the 32 Path Ways, to understand the knowledge of each one, to experience the fullest of each. One learns a good foundation and gains the life experience and to find your life purpose. This book goes beyond his others books, Simplified Qabal Magic, More Simplified Magic. It has for me, amplifys the effect on my power (magic) in my life in many ways.

Crazy good second installment to a great series!

My goodness Hold 2 did not disappoint! It starts where Hold 1 left off. Craddock lost his chance at making it big. Cassidy received the grant she needed. Because Zeke's comments and Cassidy not meeting Craddock before his match it made Craddock jump to conclusions about Zeke and Cassidy. I was upset with the ending of book 1. Craddock hurt Cassidy all because he thought Cassidy was going behind his back with Zeke. They needed more trust and communication in order to avoid what happened between them.

Now, upset he lost his girl and his career Craddock gets an unexpected second chance to go professional. Unfortunately this second chance keeps Cassidy at the hands of Zeke. Zeke doesn't hold a match to Craddock at all. I didn't like him in the first part and still don't like him. He plays nice and sweet but we know he has another side to him. How I wish I was Cassidy's best friend in the story to knock some sense into her and give her advice. But with the little advice she does get from her old social worker she has to learn and make decisions basically on her own.This definitely keeps you hooked and your emotions high just waiting for what turn it will take and this has alot of them that are not expected. Craddock is still the sexy alpha that I love and can't get enough of. Chemistry between him and Cassidy is so much hotter than the first book! Again I love how it's a story about romance as much as it is about MMA, we get a good amount of both. Jayne did wonders with this second installment. Crazy love triangle, that second chance at the pro's that may not be what it's all cracked up to be. And the ending!! Just brilliant! I definitely can not wait for Hold 3. I can't even imagine the goodness Jayne will come up for us. The wait will kill me but I know it definitely will be worth it. Again hold 2 does not disappoint at all! In love with this series so far!

Jayne Blue I've enjoyed plenty of her other books. So I was so happy to be given opportunity to give my opinion on her new Series Hold

I had a hard time writing this review, Cuz I didn't want to give away too much in my review ... I would definitely recommend this book... This is book 2 in a 3 part series
In the Hold Trilogy Book Two - Cassidy and Craddock learn that letting go can sometimes be harder than holding on.....

Craddock:
Craddock feels that Cassidy lied & betrayed with his enemy & rival (Zeke).. Great Wolves Gym had kicked him out when he kneed Zeke Powell in the head. So much for loyalty. The league had disqualified Craddock
Craddock dream of becoming Professional MMA fighter was seem to be lost with his title .. Until he got unexpected call from Meyer Thompson - offering him to be a contestant in Tough to the Top.” in Vegas.
Tough to the Top was the reality show that offered the winner a spot at a real 21C title.
Tough to the Top and Vegas were his second chance. This time no woman, nor the Preacher’s Son's bulls***, was going to get in his way.
Craddock start focus all his time & energy on his Career in the MMA...
Craddock was able to keep his temper under control in this book. Craddock had realized that his temper is what put him in this bad place

Cassidy:

Cassidy Parker had no idea how this had gone so wrong. She loved Craddock - Craddock loved her? Why was he with those women? It made her physically sick. She had given him everything. She opened herself up to him. Why had decided to hurt her?

Cassidy friendship with Zeke started to become more, but when Zeke touch Cassidy it wasn't the same special feeling she got when Craddock touch her.. Cassidy try to overcome her feeling for Craddock deciding the only way she could forget Craddock was to re-focus, remember what Craddock did to her , re-commit to her own goals. She was not here to fall in love. She was here to pay the rent while she got her social work degree.

Everything seem to be falling into place for Cassidy now Her school was paid for with her grant... .. Cassidy had focus on all the upcoming fight events for work. Her relationship with Zeke seem calm & drama free..
until Cassidy found out that Craddock training this week in their home gyms
Cassidy needed to stop this roller coaster with Craddock and Zeke

Now Bess & Sawyer that's one book I wouldn't mind reading .....
I believe the final installment of this series the characters will be facing some big challenges....
I am looking forward to the next addition to this Trilogy..... I am so glad that I will not have to wait long for the next installment

Review for HOLD TRILOGY : BOOK TWO
I was holding my breath for this book even though I was devastated at the end of book one. Craddock not only broke Cassidy’s heart…his actions broke mine too. So I was hoping to find some redemption for both of them in this book….and I wasn’t disappointed. Craddock has gone to Vegas to get his wish of still getting into the 21CFL…another fight league…after his disastrous fight with THE PREACHERS SON. He is still convinced Cassidy cheated on him and he wanted to hurt her. He accomplished that. What he doessn’t know is that he has also left the door wide open for Zeke to come through, just as he had planned. Craddock is totally focused in Vegas, knows why he is there, and nothing is going to stop him this time. As the contestants are whittled down from 16 to 8 in the first round, Craddock has a better idea of who will be the last two men standing, and he knows he is going to be one of them. What he doesn’t know is that there are sleazy producers and assistants there willing to do anything to achieve their goals….even if that means drugs and foul play. When the fighters are down to four, it is decided that they will go to their home gyms for training once again. This means Craddock and Cassidy are going to be together once again. While Craddock has been in Vegas, Cassidy has started her internship at Wayne State and loves it. She has also become involved with Zeke, which was his plan all along. She has also been looking in on Craddock’s brother Dylan occasionally. Of course, there is going to be some conflict, but Craddock has to hold it together for the cameras. When Jessie drops a bomb about the timing of Cassidy and Zeke getting together, Craddock knows he has screwed up big time and hopes like hell he can convince Cassidy to give him another chance. Cassidy is stunned to learn what Zeke said to Craddock in the ring that caused Craddock to snap. She confronts Zeke and he confirms what he had said. That makes Cassidy pull back from Zeke, mostly because he lied, but also because she never got over Craddock. When Cassidy comes to Craddock to apologize, they cannot stay out of each others arms or lives. But Craddock knows he has to play it smart this time…and he does. But all that flies out the window while they are watching the tapes of the show and Craddock realizes he has been setup…and Cassidy runs once again. Mad as hell, Craddock confronts the producer and gets a wake up call. He will finish what he started in Vegas, but by his rules this time. When he gets the proof he needs after winning, he plays his trump card and wins. Now his mind is made up and he is going to get Cassidy back, he’s not exactly sure how, but he is willing to play dirty to get her once again. Will his plan work…or will Cassidy be able to walk away this time and never look back ??

Careful and profound theology of worship.

Warren Wiersbe has done what few other writers on this subject have been able to accomplish: he has actually reviewed what the Scriptures teach about worship and presented it in a way which is both insightful and practical. The heart of Wiersbe's book is that worship is not about singing and praise, but raither is an expression of a relationship of love with God. What a marvelous insight into the real biblical doctrine of worship!
If you want to be challenged in your Christian walk and if you want to learn all about worshiping your Creator, check out this marvelous work. Expect to find yourself rethinking your own relationship with God and re-evaluating the way your congregation goes about its business in Sunday morning worship.
