The final product is one of the finest problem solving book - mostly short and lucid solution which ensures the understanding of the reader. The sequel to "Problems from the book"

Not really a solutions manual

This book does far more than just list the solutions to the PftB problems, even if you throw out the ten wonderfully written addendums. The "solutions" portions have actually been re-arranged so that problems with similar solution ideas are sorted into the same sub-sections (rather than in the order they appear in the exercises) written. That even makes it possible to read this like an independent text. (It also throws off the problem numbering with respect to the original, but hey, if you just wanted solutions you already had the MathLinks forum.)
Once again, the solutions and addendums are written in the same instructive tone as in PftB ("this is not really what we want to prove, but it shows that we are on the right track", "the miracle is that if this fails, then we can apply T2's lemma...", and so on), where the solutions and their motivations are really explained, rather than just a "proof for the sake of a proof" which is so common in many other math textbooks.

Anyone who enjoyed Problems from the Book would enjoy this book, too. Cannot wait to see something like this come out for the second half of PftB.

Chapter eighteen “Race and Racism” and chapter nineteen ” Justice or Not” deals with racism and injustices in our society. Chapter twenty “History, Cronyism, Nepotism, and Affirmative Action” is sure to get many conversations started. Chapter twenty two “The Media Is To Blame” discusses the bias in the media and how they cover certain stories. The book is a call to get back to using common sense in schools, work environment, politics, and in our everyday lives. Common Sense is something that we all are born with, but often forget to use it. You could compare having common sense and not using this God given gift, to having a lifejacket aboard the Titanic, yet refusing to put it on. It got me in trouble sometimes but I was always content with who I was. I was always very stubborn and strong willed. I was not my mothers or fathers picked in the family. My mom was more bias to my older and younger brother, while my father showed partiality to my sister. I was the second child born to the family, and my father’s first born. Early on it bothered me that I was not one of the favorites but it made me the person that I am today. I don’t mind standing along on issues, and I don’t mind speaking my mind when I feel that I am absolutely right. I like to get along with people but not at the expense of compromising my core beliefs. I liked to think that those core beliefs are grounded and rooted in truth. This is something that is challenged regularly if you are married. You must learn to have a balance which I am still learning after 17 years of marriage. When I first met my wife I knew that she was a strong willed person. She has made me more stubborn with that strong will that she has. We have 3 kids Ariah, Josiah, and Isaiah who have taught me patience.

Go See The Light

And God said let there be man, let him be black, and let him be angry!

To start off, I'm a half white, half Mexican whose reviewing a book by a black author. That shouldn't matter, but in today's PC world (which is very heavily addressed in this book) you can never be too careful.

First, this is a great 'tell it like it is' book. Heck, it says it right on the cover. Mr. Williams does not pull his punches. He does not just hit the target, he punches right through it. As I'm sure one could assume, this book hits on several sensitive (God I hate that word) subjects ranging from the state of America under Obama, to immigration, to racism and affirmative action, to the media, and to, as he calls it, the 'Homosexual Mafia'. Yes, many will be offended, but hopefully by the time you get to the conclusion, you will also be enlightened.

It is not just one man's political rant though. No sir! Mr Williams has done his homework and research, and it is noted in the book.

Also, there are lighthearted (yet spot on in their observations and recommendations) chapters dealing with marriage, issues in the workplace, and rearing children. The author again does not pull punches and calls out the many families out there making boys into sissies and destroying the next generations competitive edge by declaring everyone 'winners'. He is not going to hit you with anything too advanced for anyone to apply in their own life though, as long as they use a little Common Sense.

This is also not a black mans soap box to attack other races. As I said, I'm not black. Did he address whites? Sure. Mexicans? Of course. Asians and middle easterners? You better believe it! Blacks? Probably more than all the other ones combined. He isn't some self hating, uppity 'Tom' either. He doesn't address issues by pointing a finger saying 'They're so bad'. No, he shows good, and bad qualities of each different group. He doesn't do it for the sake of complaining though, he does it as one man refusing to let ANYONE get away with feeling superior. He shows how we're all flawed, but we all have good in us too. The bottom line is we're all human, and we're all equal.

One of my favorite parts was that he included the full transcript of the Declaration of Independence. Sure anyone can go to Google or a History textbook and read it for themselves, but where it falls in the book is perfect, and having it in text right in front of me, reading it for my own enjoyment, really made me study what it says. We are not a country of cowards giving handouts, we are great, but in a bad slump that has gone on for too long now. With a little Common Sense, we can be great again.

Finally someone that understands the race card is dividing us all and how we all are being played

A friend of mine sent me a link to the author's Youtube video. Having been a former LEO (Caucasian at that) and having gone out into the field in the black communities for over 30 years and seeing what he is talking about with my own eyes, I have to salute him for telling it like it is. The political powerhouses in control are using the media to divide races and create tension and dissent so that they will take sides on political issues to control public opinion, grab votes, and control the masses by dividing them one against another. They have created a mentality where people feel like nothing is under their control, that they do not matter, and that none of their efforts will result in any accomplishments. People I'm telling you that is the furthest thing from the truth. They are afraid of unity. Very afraid. They know they would be removed if people woke up. Everyone, (especially white folks) should buy this book to see the perspectives of a black man who has figured it out and is trying to wake people up by using common sense. I have no affiliation nor do I know the author but I do appreciate that he has the courage to tell it like it is. I think if people would just be honest with one another and not get so offended a lot of mending and healing would take place.

Everything I am thinking but would never say

I could not put this book down. This is EVERYTHING I think on a daily basis and my coworkers and I snicker about, but to be polite and politically correct we could and never would say out loud. The book really brings to light how society expects and demands the best and finest things in life, weather they deserve it or not. Have recommended to all of my co-workers. Can't wait to read more from this author.

What a wonderful book! Mark Robinson does an excellent job of creating mental images of the sights, sounds, and aromas of the Japanese izakaya -eating/drinking pubs. Typically smaller, locally owned and operated, these restaurant/bars are unique and endearing. Well written with vivid descriptions and beautiful photographs by Masashi Kuma I could almost taste the cuisine and hear the laughter. Having lived and worked in Tokyo and Toyotashi (yes, the home of Toyota トヨタ自動車) I have been privileged to visit many izakaya. Whether or not you've been to an izakaya in Japan or in the USA or elsewhere I'm sure you will enjoy this book. If you haven't already been, then make plans now. You'll be greeted with a warm

Taste the real, everyday Japan - definitely a classic

Everyone who's ever been to Japan could tell you anecdotes about their best meal there in a tiny, off-the-beaten-track traditional inn. Obviously, closed-minded people who think that Indians eat curry, Americans eat burgers, and Japanese eat sushi, will have carefully avoided eating in such "not in NY times reviews" places, and that's the whole point of this book. Having lived for a year there (and been there another dozen times), I had the chance to discover these fantastic traditional eateries, with original, uncommon, and incredible house recipes: the Izakaya. Obviously, most of them have no English menu nor does anyone there speak a single word of English - which is why they are hard to access for tourists, and this book recreates the atmosphere of such places: nice locals that will start talking to you (in Japanese), the sake pouring wild, fresh beer with crunchy bits of fried never-heard-of parts of even-less-heard-of animals (or is it?) that taste incredibly good. These recipes are simple and mostly quick, none of the fancy/schmoozy elaborations of Nobu or Morimoto. Everyday items that you can cook at home (obviously Japanese stores nearby and access to fresh seafood will help).

The book itself is gorgeous, with great photos that recreate the ambiance and mood in the various "favorites" of the author, this is much more than a cookbook. It's almost an ethnographic study about these gems that make the Japanese food scene so varied, so colorful, so alive. This book was born out of the passion of his author, and you can feel his enthusiasm on every page, which makes it grasping. If you've ever been to Japan with friends yet felt that, somehow, you missed a chance to eat something really local, really unique, really Japanese that no tourist alone would have found on its own, this book is for you then.

Granted, I do have a fetish for Japanese food (and have a pretty abnormal collection of Japanese cookbooks), but this one stands out as informative, visually pleasant, original (as in I've never found another book on this topic), and especially filled with simple recipes you can try at home with little effort. Definitely worth every buck!

Great book about the world's best drinking spots

Izakayas are the greatest pubs in the world. But unlike say Irish pubs or German beer halls, they don't follow the same global template. Menus vary widely, and the vibe can range from rowdy blue collar to epicurean ultra-chic. Mark Robinson's achievement here is demystifying the topic (along with recipes, the book covers history, culture, etiquette, and a list of great izakaya to check out) in a way that enhances its magical appeal.

About the Author

DR. JASON WILLIAMS is a Johns Hopkins Hospital-trained psychiatrist. He has subspecialty training in psychosomatic medicine and was taught how to use and interpret the world's foremost personality test, the NEO PI-R, by one of the co-inventors of the tool. Dr. Williams lives in northern Virginia and practices both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry there. Some of his patients/clients are high-net-worth individuals who seek to maximize their wealth through better mental health.

LARRY WILLIAMS is a full-time trader and fund manager who speaks at major investment conferences throughout the world. He has created numerous market indicators, including Williams % R, the Ultimate Oscillator, COT indicators, and the POIVI (price open interest volume accumulation indicator). Larry Williams has written seven other books on stocks and trading.

The NEO-AC of Trading

First of all, this book was not what I was expecting. Since it was written by a psychiatrist I expected a deeply psychological book talking about childhood memories, the subconscious, etc. There is very little of that in this book. Don't let the fact that Dr. Williams is a psychiatrist put you off. Chapters are short and the book is very readable.

Dr. Jason Williams is the son of Larry Williams, a very successful trader and one the of the best known traders in the country. I was familiar with and respected Larry Williams work. That is what attracted me to the book.

What Dr. Williams does in the book is apply a psychological test, the NEO-AC, to some of the nation's top traders to see if there are any personality trades in common among these successful traders. This would give a clue as to what personality traits make up a successful trader which could then be used by the readers to assess their own psychology for trading. It was clear to me up front that I would get much more out of the book if I took the NEO-AC myself. I did some looking on line to find someone who would administer the test, had trouble finding anyone, but soon found that the test (or a form of it) could be taken on line for free so I thought that would be better than nothing. (can't vouch for the validity of the on line test). It consisted of 100 questions and the results were presented in bar graph form. I then measure the length of each bar, put the results in a spreadsheet, and sorted my NEO-AC categories from high to low. The categories corresponded very well with the categories in the book. I spend time telling you this because although you can get many insights from the book without it, I think knowing your own NEO-AC score adds immeasurably to getting full value from the book.

Dr. Williams starts by talking in layman's terms about the brain. (One thing that jumped out at me was that he said to forget about the popular notion of "right brain" verses "left brain") He then talked about the two major dimensions of personality, Neuroticism and Extraversion, before getting into the specific categories of the NEO-AC test itself. All along he ties the discussion to trading and personality in general. At the end of most chapters are William's "Mental Edge Tips". At the end of the book are eight "case study" chapters where he discusses the NEO-AC test results of the top traders, including his dad. One of the chapters I found especially interesting was about Linda Raschke with whom I had recently taken a class. The last case study is of a "perfect trader" as measured by the test.

There are insights to be gained in this book by both the new and experienced trader. There a lot of trading "truths" to be gleaned from the book. One of the keys to successful trading is to determine what type of trading best fits your personality....system (mechanical) trading or discretionary trading. This book will help you answer that question. Perhaps the most important finding for me was that my personality type fit very closely with the "ideal trader" as measured by the NEO-AC which gives me more confidence as I go forward with my own trading endeavors. And...yes...there are some personality traits common to most successful traders.

Amazingly insightful

I've always wondered how my innate personality traits might be affecting my trading, and my overall life and well-being, positively and negatively, and now I have some real answers!

This book is very approachable and provides way more insight than any other trading self-help type book I've ever come across (and there have been many!). I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their trading/investing from the inside out, or anyone interested in finding out how their personality makeup would affect any ventures into trading/investing.

As I've studied through the book I have been completely blown away by how insightful the NEO-AC personality test results have been. I followed Dr. Williams advice, when at the end of Ch. 8 he recommends taking the NEO-AC test before proceeding in reading the book. Taking the test and then reading about the scores and their meanings have explained so many of my past trading behaviors, and why some approaches work for me while others never did.

I really like that at the end of the self-exploratory material there are several case studies of successful traders. I just read the one on Larry Williams and appreciated it as a real-world example of seeing how personality analysis can help even a seasoned and successful trader. I look forward to reading the rest of the case studies and book and then implementing the advice and exercises into my own world of trading!

One of the best trading books I have ever read.

This is probably the most useful trading book I have ever read. Once you have mastered your technicals and your strategy, your worst enemy is normally yourself. Getting control of your emotions and getting to know you better is critical for trading success. It helped me identify my weaknesses and strength and now I'm working to adapt to them. Must read if you are serious about trading for a living.
