As with the other recent books in this series, this Classic study of the Ju 52 offers the most definitive account published in recent years of this bulwark of the Luftwaffe, which first saw military service in the 1930s and was then engaged in operations in the Spanish Civil War through the end of World War II.
The all-metal, three engine Ju 52/3m enjoyed a solid reputation among its crews and the troops and paratroops who used it and depended on it. It is a machine synonymous with the images of the German attacks on Holland and France in 1940 and Crete in 1941 when hundred of "Tante Jus" were used to drop paratroopers to successfully capture key tactical and strategic areas.
The full history, however, goes back much further. Built as a passenger aircraft for Deutsche Lufthansa, the Ju 52 ranges as far as South Africa, Mozambique, India and Latin America, as well being operated by several other European countries such as Belgium, Equador, Peru and Uruguay. Britain operated several Ju 52s.
The aircraft was first blooded in the Spanish Civil War, where it was pressed into service as a crude, but effective, bomber with the Legion Condor. From then on the Luftwaffe deployed it on every battle front in the West, in the Mediterranean and in the East. An example also flew in Iraq. The Ju 52 served as a stalwart transport, often operating in the most hostile conditions, with ice or dust, lifting men, animals, food, supplies, ammunition, mail, and spare parts vital for German military operations, such as the North African supply routes at Demyansk, Stalingrad and also in the Ardennes in 1944. It was also converted into the ambulance and mine-hunting roles, and was adapted as a seaplane. After the war, the Ju 52 flew on as late as the 1980s, testimony to its strength and reliability.

Good and authoritative work on the legendary "Tante Ju"

In a nutshell this book is a true “opera omnia” on the ageless Junkers Ju 52, one among the most known III Reich’s icons.
This boxy three engine transport had an incredibly long and intense operational career. Produced in near 5.000 units the Ju 52 lived through all the Nazi’s rise and fall period, at first in the civil guise and then in the menacing Luftwaffe’s insignia.
This so long and winding historical record deserves a wide and in deep treatment and Crecy Publishing accomplished this in full colours.
This volume indeed belongs to the Classic Series of this publisher devoted to the most important aeroplanes and its impeccable typographic guise and big size will be surely appreciated by all aviation fans.
Since the beginning the outstanding work of Author Forsyth is clear: the first chapters devoted to Professor Hugo Junkers life and his great work in the aeronautical metallic structures are truly a gem in themselves.
Also the 700 photographs are among the finest on the subject; many are directly shot on the Dessau’s Junkers workshop and picture the peculiar “Tante Ju” structure.
Then Mr. Forsyth traces the Ju 52’s evolution from the underpowered single engine Ju 52/1m to the definitive and excellent three engine Ju 52/3m and the successful career of this plane on the civil routes both in Europe and in the other continents where its sturdiness and reliability made the difference and brought to life many long range connections in remote countries.
For a deliberate choice by the Author the long and complex military history is structured on the basis of the Ju 52’s different roles. This allows to better describe the aeroplane’s technique and tactics in the extremely varied roles and missions carried out for 15 years.
The wealth iconographic section also includes maps, original technical forms, Lufthansa posters and the beautiful profiles by Tim Brown (the military ones are also weathered at the right tone to appreciate the awful operational conditions of these machines on all war fronts).
A book highly recommended to all aviation fans and a “must have” for all interested in the '30s and WW II aviation.

The definitive book on the Ju 52

Mr. Forsyth does it again. Tons of new information and photos on this bird, and the entire development line up to and including the Ju 352. Many unpublished photos, and the few that have been published before are no wheres near the clarity of the one here. This is, and will be, the definitive book on "Tante Ju". Get the book now, as years from now the price for a used one will be a lot higher as are all the books in this Classic series.
