From the Back Cover
'A theology of the atonement should move one to worship and prayer. J. McLeod Campbell does exactly that. Much in harmony with the renewed interest in the Trinity, McLeod Campbell reawakens the doctrine of the atonement, the 'sleeping giant' of Christian doctrine, with its rich implications for spirituality and ministry.... The church today needs a new biblical paradigm of the atonement as is found in The Nature of the Atonement, which sees the atonement as the development of the incarnation of God and therefore as the manifestation of God as love.' - from Christian D. Kettler, Friends University

About the Author
J. McLoed Campbell (1800–1872) is now recognized as one of the great Scottish theologians of the nineteenth century, primarily because of his book The Nature of the Atonement (1856). Living in an age and in a church that deposed him for heresy, Campbell was passionately concerned to share the good news of a God who revealed himself as a “Lover,” not simply as a “Lawgiver.” He was educated at Glasgow University and Divinity Hall. His other books include Reminiscences and Reflections.

Worth the effort.
By David McAnulty
The book's style almost makes it unaccessible, the author's long, tortured, run-on sentences frequently requiring a few "re-reads" (hence 4 instead of 5 stars!). However, the depth and originality of insights the author brings to the subject matter is well worth the effort. He effectively questions the excessively "penal" or legal view of atonement that has characterized most protestant and catholic theology. The result is a refreshing, and very Christ centered look at the cross, which emphasizes the incarnation, the perfect Sonship, the trust, the "confession" of his brother's sins, as key elements of the suffering of Christ. This book will undoubtedly challenge you and will be influential to the thinking of any student of the atonement.

McLeod Campbell, defender of the faith.
By Philip A. Clements
I consider McLeod Campbell to be in the same league as Karl Barth and Thomas Torrance. He is difficult to read because he is from a different country and a different century. Dr. Campbell was defrocked by the Church of Scotland for heresy, but it was the Kirk that was guilty of heresy.

Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton: A Master Passion, by Juliet Waldron

A Master Passion is the story of our brilliant first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, and his wife, Betsy Schuyler.

It begins with their Revolutionary War courtship. Although born poor and illegitimate, as an Aide de Camp to General George Washington, Hamilton dares to reach, boldly pursuing Betsy, daughter of a wealthy and prominent New York family.

After the war, Hamilton engages in nation building. Like all mission-driven men, he is preoccupied, often absent, and not the best provider. The trials of making ends meet and raising their ever-growing troop of children falls to Betsy, who accomplishes her task with grace and devotion.

Conflict is built into their marriage. It does not simply spring from Alexander's agonizing childhood experience of bastardy, abuse, and abandonment. To quote Alexander Pope, Hamilton's favorite poet:

“And hence one Master Passion in the breast
like Aaron's serpent, swallows up all the rest..."

Betsy's passion is Alexander. Alexander's passion is America.

Though Hamilton's financial acumen and political courage is crucial to the formation and survival of our nation, his star sets quickly. Disillusioned, political power broken, his adored eldest son killed in a duel, Hamilton goes to his own famous duel with Aaron Burr in the spirit of those noble Romans he so steadfastly admires, preferring death to dishonor.

The Master Passion places the battles of Alexander Hamilton, the lonely idealist, within a family saga rich in period detail. The great edifice for which he laid the groundwork -- America -- has become, exactly as he planned, the richest and freest country on earth.

Review
"A thoroughly researched and engaging biographical fiction based on the lives of Alexander Hamilton and his devoted wife, Elizabeth Schuyler. Once again, Ms. Waldron illuminates both the joys and the trials of a strong woman married to an often-abstracted genius."
Sara B. Camilli, Beta Reader

From the Author
Alexander Hamilton has been in my life since I was ten, with his rags to respectability--never riches--tale. He came to America, like so many others, with nothing but the head on his shoulders. As a teen, he'd fought for freedom. He'd won the respect of the commanding general and gained the hand of a lady. He fought tirelessly to get his brilliant--but far-less well-informed colleagues--to understand and accept his financial plans. If Alexander Hamilton hadn't created a system to unite those thirteen colonies by getting them to agree to pay the debts incurred to our fighting men--and to the businessmen who'd backed the War of Independence--the United States as we know it would have never happened.

But Hamilton was an immigrant, a fact his enemies never forgot or forgave. Worse, he was born illegitimate, and arrived on these shores through the charity of the planters of St. Croix. He was called slightingly, "Creole," or, with frank hostility by John Adams, "the bastard brat of a Scots peddler."

Recently, these themes moved Hamilton back into public consciousness. A few years after Ron Chernow wrote his exceptional biography, Lin-Manuel Miranda, a multi-talented first generation American, had his original hip-hop "Hamilton" storm onto Broadway.  I'm just a country girl, so I didn't know that until I'd just finished editing an old in-the-drawer story, A Master Passion.

Frankly, as a long time Hamiltonian, Lin-Manuel's show cheers me. Here in the 21st Century, while McLuhan's medium works a sea change upon us, it's probably the perfect way to communicate the story of this extraordinary man, one we were lucky to have had present at America's founding.

We all work in the media with which we're familiar. The one I know best is that of an aged and hybrid genre--the historical novel. I've written about another great man's spouse in Mozart's Wife and so naturally Hamilton's Betsy became a large part of A Master Passion as well. Her life, as well as his, sometimes reads like fiction.

Study of the "founding mothers" is (and will probably remain) a minor specialty, simply from a lack of material. 18th Century women hoped to preserve their privacy by destroying personal letters, so very often I've had to infer what might have been going on in someone's head, or elaborate and fictionalize from tidbits of information gleaned during the long time of research.

Hamilton is such a protean character that in order to produce a coherent whole I've had to omit whole episodes--important people and places--or conflate events, which I hope readers will forgive. I wanted to focus on the marriage.

Scarred by childhood violence, poverty and humiliation, Hamilton could be vain and brash, impatient with slower minds. He injured his friends and family with a sordid love-affair. His insecurity and his fury towards enemies who dragged his good name through the mud caused the political missteps which destroyed his political career. He might even be seen as the engineer of his own death.

So that's my subject: a fatally flawed great man. I've tried to I tackle these his-and-hers blockbuster stories in my own way, often through the POV of his loving (and often) dismayed wife, as an old-fashioned historical novel.

About the Author
Juliet Waldron has lived in many US states, in the UK and the West Indies. She earned a B. A. in English, but has worked at jobs ranging from artist's model to brokerage. Thirty years ago, after her sons left home, she dropped out of 9-5 and began to write, hoping to create a genuine time travel experience for her readers.

She's a grandmother, a cat lady, and a dedicated reader of history and herstory. She loves music, from classical to pop.

Juliet spends a lot of her time visiting other centuries, but she's also quite certain she doesn't want to live in any of them. She's known Alexander Hamilton since they were both eleven and living in the West Indies.

On summer afternoons, she and her husband of fifty years quietly roam the back roads of PA on his black Hayabusa, often ending up at the Carsonville Hotel.

HAMILTON LIVES!
By Patricia A. Martin
I have been a fan of Ms. Waldron's writing since she arrived on Amazon, and her newest book, The Master Passion, has been worth waiting for. So many authors simply rehash old facts, trying to respin history ... Ms. Waldron revisits Alexander Hamilton as we have never seen him, and he becomes true flesh and blood, not simply a figure of the past. Her research is clearly impeccable, and she has been able to give full voice to characters seldom (if ever) written about in Hamilton's life. He was truly a tortured soul, but no more than any other passionate, driven man (or woman, for that matter, as Kostanze in Mozart's Wife, or Genesee, in the book by the same name). The reader is treated to the early years of Hamilton's life, and the burden of being truly a bastard in the days when it really mattered. His lifelong journey from an unwanted child to a founding father becomes an adventure that lasts through the final chapter. Kudos to Ms. Waldron, and thanks from one of her legion of fans.

Intensely real and readable
By Meredith Whitford
I know very little about American history, and all I knew about Alexander Hamilton is that he's rather a hero to several friends of mine. After reading Juliet Waldron's excellent novel about him I'm starting to see why. Waldron is a novelist who can be relied upon to have researched her subject thoroughly, so, in reading about people and an era unfamiliar to me, I felt I was in safe hands. But don't let me give the impression that this book is a dry piece of work -- on the contrary, it's extremely readable, in fact I found it close to unputdownable as the story took shape and the various characters were introduced. It's well paced, full of sympathetic and interesting people, and every historical detail is convincing. Hamilton feels very real as his personal story unfolds from a tough childhood to the start of a famous career. I'm eager to follow his story in the next novel about him.

To Master Passions In Us All
By Frank Talaber
Juliet's writing pulled me right in. Her research is amazing and detailed, I thought I was there in the 1700's. The romance and how intricate it was to have one, let alone behave in public is wonderful. In addition it made me realize just how far civilization and human rights have come since then. It also made me realize why driven men like Hamilton did what they did to make the free country called America. Also the courage of Betsy to love and want a man like him, shows that women can be as driven as the men are. Excellent book, especially for anyone reading up on early American history.

Introducing issues in dynamic memory and case-based reasoning, this comprehensive volume presents extended descriptions of four major programming efforts conducted at Yale during the past several years. Each descriptive chapter is followed by a companion chapter containing the micro program version of the information.

The authors emphasize that the only true way to learn and understand any AI program is to program it yourself. To this end, the book develops a deeper and richer understanding of the content through LISP programming instructions that allow the running, modification, and extension of the micro programs developed by the authors.

A nice book with the history of the ideas previous to achieve the MOP concept. In addition, this book teach how implement MOP using Common Lisp, in particular take advantage of macros in Lisp. Now Lisp is a great language again... Clojure under JVM is the last word in computing advances.

A Natural History of Conifers, by Aljos Farjon

A compelling account of the extraordinary relatives of ordinary garden conifers.

Leading expert Aljos Farjon provides a compelling narrative that observes conifers from the standpoint of the curious naturalist. It starts with the basic question of what conifers are and continues to explore their evolution, taxonomy, ecology, distribution, human uses, and issues of conservation. As the story unfolds many popular misconceptions are dispelled, such as the false notion that all conifers have cones. The extraordinary diversity of conifers begins to dawn as Farjon describes the diminutive creeping shrub Microcachrys tetragona, whose strange seed cones resemble raspberries, and the prehistoric-looking Araucaria meulleri.

The taxonomic diversity of conifers is huge and Farjon goes on to relate how, over the course of 300 million years, these trees and shrubs have adapted to survive geological upheavals, climatic extremes, and formidable competition from flowering plants. All who seek to learn more about the early history of life on our planet will cherish this book.

Review

“Organized in topically centered, lively chapters that include a discussion of conifer ecology and conservation. It is well illustrated with color photographs and line drawings of the trees, their structures, and the landscapes they dominate. Not exactly an encyclopedia but rather a sourcebook, this is the place to go for information about conifers. Highly recommended.” —Choice

“If you want to find out more about conifers, then [this book] by the naturally acclaimed expert, Aljos Farjon, will sate your curiosity, your thirst for knowledge and your enthusiasm for those exciting plants that make up this group.” —Virginia Master Gardeners Association

“Not since Rachel Carson has the public been graced with a scientist that writes with the interest of a novelist. Anyone with a curiosity about the early history of plant life on our planet will relish this book.” —Garden Compass

From the Inside Flap

Conifers are the most diverse, interesting, beautiful trees in the world, so why is it that our gardens are home to so few species? Part of the reason lies in their economic importance which, by focusing attention on relatively few species, has limited our understanding of one of the most remarkable plant groups on earth. Leading expert Aljos Farjon provides a broader perspective with this compelling narrative that observes conifers from the standpoint of the curious naturalist. It starts with the basic question of what conifers are and continues to explore their evolution, taxonomy, ecology, distribution, human uses, and issues of conservation. As the story unfolds many popular misconceptions are dispelled, such as the notion that all conifers have cones (untrue), and the extraordinary diversity of conifers begins to dawn as Farjon describes the diminutive creeping shrub "Microcachrys tetragona," whose strange seed cones resemble raspberries, and the prehistoric-looking "Araucaria meulleri." The taxonomic diversity of conifers is huge and Farjon goes on to relate how, over the course of three 300 million years, these trees and shrubs have adapted to survive geological upheavals, climatic extremes, and formidable competition from flowering plants. Scarcely less remarkable is his explanation of how conifers, with only 627 species, grew to occupy every continent on earth ranging from the high latitudes to the tropics. This illuminating review will fascinate plant lovers who wish to discover the extraordinary relatives of ordinary garden conifers, natural historians, who will relish seeing conifers reviewed in a broad context, and all who seek to learn more about the early history of life on our planet.

About the Author
Aljos Farjon headed the temperate section of the herbarium at the Royal Botanic gardens, Kew 1996–2006. He has published 10 books and more than 120 papers mainly, but not exclusively, on conifers. He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London, Chair of the Conifer Specialist Group of IUCN (the World Conservation Union) and a member of both the International Association for Plant Taxonomy and the Royal Horticultural Society’s Conifer Registration Advisory Committee.

GREAT Book On The Biology Of Conifers
By P. Pollock
I came into possession of this book in the strangest way ... but I'm so glad I did! I asked a botanist for a book that would help me with tree systematics (identifucation) and this book was recommended. It was a little strange to make the purchase, because i was really looking for info on oak and birch trees. And secondly, it just so happened ... that i had found some very unique conifer trees on the tops of the southern Andes mountains, and i really wanted to identify them. So what the heck, i bought the book. What a pleasure, when it arrived!! Author Aljos Farjon has done a terrific job of describing conifer trees, how they have evolved and changed over time, and how the various aspects of their biology ... produce the tree that is standing in front of you today. Furthermore, the book is very readable, and the color plates are high quality. i was encouraged to discover that I could identify which Family 'my tree' in the Andes belonged to ... it didnt take long at all. This book is Highly Recommended if you have an interest in conifers, tree identification, tree biology ... or you just love trees. Big thanks to the author!

I wanted to like this book more than I did.
By James Philipp
This book fills a gap in the popular literature on conifers: there's really a strong need for a comprehensive review of the natural history of conifers. But if that's what you are looking for, you will be disappointed here. Still, this volume has some strengths.

Some of the high points of this text: (1) There a many photos of species where it is difficult to find good photographs; most notably of the Southern hemisphere species. It is almost worth keeping the book on my shelves just for the "tree porn". (2) Again, it is really the Southern species where this book really provides new details. If you are looking for a work that discusses the new finds in Indo-China or New Caledonia this is a book not to be missed.

Where I was disappointed: (1) Most notably, this book is in dire need of editorial coherence. It reads mostly like a collection of magazine articles that have been very lightly reshaped into a thematic structure. This book really would have benefited from a more disciplined analytic structure. (2) I really wanted to see more sustained discussion of the evolutionary linkages of the conifers--especially in reference to Northern hemisphere species. There's bits and pieces here (even chapters with titles that look like they will provide the sustained analysis that I'm looking for) but the discussions are just so scattered as to be frustrating.

In short, this is the type of book that you can open up at almost any point and start reading--and that's not necessarily a good thing. Again, I really wanted to like this book more than I did.

A Book Worthy of its Subject But Somewhat Flawed
By Ronald M. Lanner
This book has a lot going for it. The author has been most recently head of the herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and has had a front-row seat as a conifer taxonomist during the development of three key disciplines of the last few decades: molecular genetics, cladistic analysis, and earth history. Unlike many taxonomists he glories in making extensive field trips throughout the conifer world, for business and pleasure. His writing style is generally clear and engaging, and occasionally hits some very high notes. And he is a good photographer and a talented botanical artist. Thus he has created a modern treatment of the conifers that would have been impossible just a few years ago, and he has imbued it with deep concern for the biodiversity of the order Coniferales and the preservation of rare and endangered species. He interprets "natural history" broadly and is free to inquire into any aspect of conifer lore, from evolution to forest products. Surely this book will accomplish the author's goal of bringing more respect to these tribes of trees that are major parts of the silva in both hemispheres.
There is a wealth of fascinating information here, and the author is an affable guide taking us along on numerous exciting quests. The stories of discovery of new-to-science conifers like Wollemia and Xanthocyparis add spice to the overall conifer story, as do travels to New Caledonia and other venues of remarkable trees. But not everything is equally well done. Some chapters are densely academic, heavy going for amateurs lacking technical credentials. A preoccupation with numerical measures of diversity, and an emphasis on extinct groups may not appeal to many.
Mistakes or faux pas are fairly common, and range from the trivial to the profound. A few examples: use of the term "appendices" where American English would use "appendages" (with neither term in the too-skimpy glossary)adds puzzlement to an already dense anatomical discussion of cone structure; reference to a 3600+ year-old Utah juniper known since 1956 to be less than half that age; numerous fine botanical drawings whose plant parts are unlabeled and lack scales (i.e. "X 2"); a dismissal of the possible evolutionary importance of hybridization in conifers despite its commonness in pines and firs; an equally abrupt dismissal of the idea of reticulate evolution, an area of active research; a weak treatment of mycorrhizae which does not mention the profoundly different types found in Pinaceae vs. Cupressaceae -- surprising for a taxonomist; a description of the mutualism of nutcrackers and white pines with several material factual errors; a statement that bark beetles invade the cambium, while they actually invade the phloem; omitting windborne soil particles from the ingredients of "canopy soil", which accumulates in branch crotches and sustains epiphytes; attributing clones of Pinus pumila to shoots sprouting from the roots whereas it is due to rooting of branches in contact with the ground. The author is often on shaky ground writing about wood. For example, he errs in stating that Great Basin bristlecone pine "has some of the densest and hardest of all woods", or that sugar pine and western white pines are "nonresinous", or that wood of Cupressaceae is "more fibrous" than that of Pinaceae (he must mean finer-grained), or that hollow trees grow new wood on the inside as well as the outside of the trunk. The fleshy fruits of Torreya are labeled as "seeds" in a photograph. Though geography seems one of his strong suits, the author writes incorrectly that Port-Orford-Cedar "is restricted to mountains on the border between California and Oregon". He states twice that California's only Taxaceae species is Torreya californica, overlooking Taxus brevifolia. In cataloging that state's biodiversity he claims 22 pines. In my book Conifers of CaliforniaConifers of California, I list 18 pines (including P. washoensis, around which there is some controversy)plus one pinyon pine hybrid. I cannot quite see where 4 more species have immigrated to this state.
The book's index is not as lengthy and inclusive as a book of this scope deserves. You will not find cambium, seeds, rust diseases, roots, or many other terms to take you to useful information.
Even more grievous, however, is the very skimpy bibliography. The purpose of this book is to make available much of what has been learned about conifers in recent decades, and a reader should be able to follow up some of the many leads provided here.Yet the bibliography lists a mere 52 items. Ten of these are the author's own previous works and 16 are on paleobotanical topics. Nine are general biological works or are about other plants than conifers. Why does this matter?
Well, take for example the author's statement that drooping pine needles may be an adaptation to protect them from dwarfmistletoe infection. He gives no indication whether this is his idea, or the result of someone's research. If you want more on this, you cannot get help from the literature list. This is true of many speculations, possible matters-of-fact, and arguments made throughout the text. The feeble bibliography not only leaves much of the text unsupported, but impedes readers from further pursuit. Besides, it would have been a simple matter to list the most useful 100 conifer books as a special feature, tying this new volume to the historical development of conifer science.

Cassidy's Guide to Everyday Etiquette (and Obfuscation), by Sue Stauffacher

Eleven-year-old Cassidy has just inherited a gift from her late great-grandmother. Unfortunately, that “gift” turns out to be a summer trapped in etiquette school. What good are manners, anyway, for a girl who dreams of living life on the road as a hobo—er, “knight of the road”?

As if trying to remember to keep her elbows off the table isn’t bad enough, Cassidy’s best friend, Jack, suddenly seems more interested in doing chores for the new teenage girl who’s moved in next door than in fishing with Cassidy down by the river. Not even her classic epic pranks seem to be saving Cassidy from having her worst summer ever. It’s time to face facts: growing up stinks.

Veteran middle-grade author Sue Stauffacher returns with a cranky, pranky, laugh-out-loud tomboy heroine who might just learn the hard way that manners do matter, and that people can change.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Eleven-year-old Cassidy wants nothing more than to be a Knight of the Road, and she has a lazy summer of fishing and pulling pranks planned as preparation—until her great-grandmother's will stipulates she must take etiquette lessons. Not only is Cassidy sorely lacking in social graces, she's prone to calamity; the outlook for learning manners is not so good. On top of everything else, a new oddness between Cassidy and her best friend, Jack, isn't making the summer any easier. Stauffacher spins a yarn of the trials of growing up in both mind and body. While the ending may feel a bit pat given Cassidy's propensity for mayhem, her distinct personality makes up for any unevenness in plot. It is unfortunate, however, that Cassidy makes cringe-worthy references throughout her narration—including one truly problematic mention, ostensibly meant to be humorous, of her "little palsy" when she finds herself near doors with bells. These off-color asides pop up repeatedly in what would otherwise be a decent coming-of-age story for the middle grade set. VERDICT Libraries would be better served stocking titles with protagonists who manage to be mischievous without using disrespectful language.—Amy Koester, Skokie Public Library, IL

For a Narrow Audience
By ashertopia
Eleven Cassidy gets sent to etiquette school to rub off some of her rough edges. The plotline of a troubled kid who gets sent to class to refine her sounds like the premise of a dozen Disney movies, but there are three problems with this story in my opinion. First, it's very tough to root for bratty Cassidy and second, there isn't a real payoff at the end, and third, it is slow moving and in my opinion is downright boring at times.

Since I'm not the target audience for this book, after I was done with it, I decided to give it to my daughter (11 years old - so right in the target demo) to see what she thought. Here's what she said, "I didn't really like this book a whole lot. I think it was very dragged out, and it had a lot more details than necessary. I liked the way the plot was laid out, but towards the end of the book or kinda got boring. I was very happy with how the characters where created, because characters are supposed to be detailed, I think they turned out very well. This book is definitely one for around the ages of 13-14 years due to some of the language. ("Big words"). This book is more for people who have a very high reading level, like they read the Harry Potter books and things like that. I think I would've enjoyed the book a whole lot more if it was just a little more straight forward. Overall I enjoyed it, but I think it's not really normally the type of book I would like to read."

My final thoughts: Cassidy and her antics are definitely in the love or hate category. How she acts, whether we root for her or even like her is really dependent on the reader. I didn't. My daughter kinda did. We both thought it was boring at times and neither of us really liked the book. With so many really good books out there I find this one hard to recommend.

Main character just wasn't likeable.
By Miss Barbara
This should have been a much better book. It had so much potential. Cassidy is a middle school girl who is forced to go to etiquette school by mandate of her grandmother’s will. This is going to seriously cut into her vacation time. Cassidy, by the way, is not a child that is perceived to be a good role model. She’s kind of a mean-spirited, smarty-pants.

The first hint of this is when she resents her BFF, Jack, and sister, Magda when they take up with the new girl on the block, Bree. Bree is from Georgia and competes in pageants. At etiquette school she finds new friends and takes up with Denton who is a socially awkward and a policeman who is also forced into the class by his fiancée hoping he’ll spruce up his manners before the wedding.

Cassidy tries, with the help of her new friends, to sabotage the school but, to me these “pranks” never came off as funny. They were kind of pathetic. What could have been an entertaining story never made it off the launching pad due to the author not giving Cassidy a character that was anything more than aggravating and grating. What author would seriously give a young girl the goal of becoming a hobo? Really? I think counseling would have been a better choice to send her to than etiquette school.

I’m not going to deny that there were some funny and amusing parts. Some of the dialog made me laugh out loud. "What's the polite-conversation word for smart aleck?" "High energy...original mind...future politician?" I replied, quoting my report cards from memory. There was some growth but it came so late in the story that I’d already decided the ship on liking this book had sailed.

There are many other books on the market these days for the 8 to 12 age bracket. Try Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures.

Self-centered main character is difficult to care about
By J. Weaver
I love books with unconventional characters, and young kids who aren't striving for popularity or beset with the need to fit in are usually fun characters. In selecting this book, I was hoping for a more mature Ivy and Bean type experience. Instead, there is Cassidy, an incredibly annoying, selfish, and obnoxious pre-teen who goes beyond independence to outright rudeness.

Obviously, I had difficulty relating to Cassidy, and she's not the kind of kid that I want my own children to see as ideal figures. It's not that I expect all book characters to be likable, I just expect them to at least have some qualities that are redeeming. Instead, I found that Cassidy, and by extension the author, tended to be mean-spirited and rely on stereotypes. For example, there's one scene where Cassidy is talking about how difficult it is to be nice to another character. The reason? He's just too smart to be nice to. Likewise, Cassidy thinks new neighbors are supposed to be grateful for the most cursory neighborliness. Older people are to be condescended to and when your carelessness causes them injury, it's something to be joked about. Parents are to be ignored, and boys climbing in your bedroom window is normal.

I don't think her self-absorption is typical of real kids, and if I can't like a character, I don't really care about what happens to her. There might be some kids who will enjoy this book. She's not the type of character, though, that I want my 8 year old to think typifies young people. And the story is overly simplistic for teens and pre-teens. I wouldn't recommend this book to any of them.

I adore this book.
By A Customer
I make short films and teach film and video, (as well as computer art), and "The Animation Book" made me weep gentle tears of joy.
Not only is it full of the information that both the beginner and the more advanced animator will use, it is an inspiration. It has stills from some of the best independent animations around, as well as pages Laybourne prompts the reader to draw in and rip out.
After reading the intro and flipping faster and faster through the pages, I felt a very powerful need to animate - right now! I haven't felt this excited about what I do in years, and I can't say I've ever found a book that has thrilled me so.
Just to make certain I wasn't being overly sentimental, I put this book in the hands of several non-animating, and highly cynical individuals. One by one, each succumbed to the charms of the little drawings of equipment and then distractedly searched around for a pencil, so they too could begin the exercises.
This was written in 1979, and Laybourne does quite an admirable job of discussing computer technology of that time. But this book rightly focuses on hands-on, experimental work with garage sale equipment; the wonderful animations an individual can make in his/her kitchen.
I want every student, every friend, to get this book, especially those working with new technology. It's a terrific antidote to the superficiality so often imposed by the ever-changing computer. "The Animation Book" encourages playing with ideas and aesthetics, a delightful reminder of what makes moving images amazing.

technical aspects of traditional hand drawn animation
By Richard Blumenthal
The Animation Book seems geared for professional animation students or the serious amateur, not the casual viewer of Saturday morning fare. The book explores many techniques such as flip books, cutouts, clay, drawing directly on film, and a host of "experimental" gadgets. However, the emphasis is on cel animation, and, in particular, the equipment required to produce it. I especially enjoyed Laybourne's suggestions for homemade animation stands, and inexpensive choices for cameras, editing equipment, and production planning. The author devotes almost no space to artistic concerns but there are plenty of other books for that. Much of the content of this book has been made obsolete by computer graphics which plays an ever-increasing role in the industry. However, if you would like to take a stab at making your own cartoons the old fashioned way, this book will provide much of the technical information you will need.

The Vienna Conventions on the Law of Treaties: A Commentary (Oxford Commentaries on International Law), by Olivier Corten, Pierre Klein

The 1969 and 1986 Vienna Conventions on the Law of Treaties are essential components of the contemporary international legal order. They aim at regulating what has become the main source of public international law and a crucial tool in inter-state relations. The Vienna Conventions codify to a significant extent the customary rules that pre-existed in the field, but also put forward innovative concepts, such as jus cogens. In spite of their importance, these two instruments had so far not been the object of a detailed commentary. These volumes fill that gap, by providing both international and national lawyers with an in-depth analysis of each provision of both Conventions. The structure of each commentary is essentially uniform, with the first part dedicated to the exposition of that provision's object and purpose and to the assessment of its customary status. The second part of each commentary deals with the main issues of interpretation raised by the provision in question. Extensive reference is made to the travaux preparatoires of both Conventions, including the work of the UN International Law Commission and the proceedings of the 1969 and 1986 diplomatic conferences, and to practice both prior to and following the adoption of the Conventions. The 90 + authors who contributed to the book come from twenty different countries and include some of the most respected experts in international law.

Review

"This is an excellent two-volume study of the Vienna Conventions on the law of treaties. The editors have assembled a large team of excellent scholars who together have accomplished the important task of providing a thorough, stimulating, readable and intellectually rich commentary on two multilateral conventions that lie at the heart of international law."
-- John Dugard, Netherlands International Law Review

"This must be the definitive reference work for these two conventions. Congratulations to Professors Corten and Klein and to each of the contributing authors."
-- International Law Prof Blog

"This is a magisterial work of sweeping proportions on a subject which, despite its somewhat esoteric nature, continues to have great practical importance."
-- Commonwealth Lawyers' Association
