Very informative book

I had to use this book for my Urban politics class, and I found that I enjoyed it a lot. Probably the first time in a class where I learned more than I thought I would. It puts issues in terms that are easy to understand. I would recommend this book for anyone who is starting to learn about Urban politics and the history of cities in the US.

Lots of great ideas, but

This books has some wonderful Christmas craft ideas and it certainly is beautiful to look at, but the directions are minimal at best. It assumes you have a working knowledge of dollmaking and other crafts. Another frustrating aspect is that all the suggested brand name notions and fabrics used in this book can't be bought in this country. But if you are a knowledgable crafter you will be able to make sense of the directions and you certainly can find substitutes for the various notions and fabrics. Best of all, the price is right.

This book is great for those of us who like to have a hand in creating the decorations for our living spaces. If you like to make dolls there are some unique designs in the book. All her designs are simple and easy to execute. I highly recommend this book.

Adorable! I'm Hooked!

I am new to the work and artistry of Tone Finnanger and I love it! I am an avid and experienced stitcher. For years I sewed and sold my creations at various craft fairs and bazaars. I don't do that anymore but I remain a creator of all things fabric and stitched.

I love quilting and stitchery books. Upon receiving this book, I am itching to jump in and make several of the projects for myself and for others. When deciding upon this book I was disappointed that the "Look Inside" feature was not available for it. I read the reviews and for the most part those of a negative vent were related to their disappointment that this work was redundant of her previous works. Since that is not a problem for me, I purchased it!

The sweet kitties on the cover are just the tip of the iceberg to what is inside. In addition to the kitties there are garden angels, birds, bumblebees, frogs, dragonflies, flowers, snails, and bunnies; these are shown in various ways such as clothed, mounted on stakes, with birdhouses, in gardening pots, strung as a garland, as wreaths and more. Using the designs further she shows how we can make these cuties into cards. I can't wait to make the cards as I am old-fashioned and still love to send notes via snail mail. :-)

In addition to the darling designs Ms. Finnanger's color choices really suit me. They lean toward soft and muted blue-grays, subtle tans, pale sage greens, brownish red, in solids, stripes and checks. However, I believe that one can use the colors that appeal to them. I would however recommend following her suggestions and instructions of fabric type to achieve the look she demonstrates. I find her examples very appealing.

I have ordered two more of Finnanger's books... I'm on my way to becoming one of her many fans!

The most useful book of music theory/songwriting I've seen

I've paged through many books about songwriting trying to find a way to understand how to construct music to complement my lyrics. This book finally solved my problem and has absolutely revolutionized my songwriting. I wouldn't recommend this book for someone who is a complete novice in music theory because it moves very quickly through a great number of topics. I took notes to make sure I got everything I could out of it! I haven't looked at another music theory book since. If you're serious about writing better music, buy this book!

I'm a guitar teacher in baltimore. I use this book with my more advanced students. Some do not read anything but guitar tablature (and they don't want to learn standard notation). They still benefit enormously from this book. Some are not songwriters (and they don't want to be), but they do want to be able to learn more songs. They want to learn them faster and retain them over time. They want to be able to figure them out just by listening to the CD. This book has been a godsend for them.

A very practical and easy understood approach to songwriting

The author is clearly a seasoned songwriter with an abundance of knowledge and skill. Yet, he is able to explain the technicalities of songwriting in such a way that the not-so-professional hobbyist songwriter like myself can follow. Having not had formal music theory training myself I could easily catch up with the essentials without feeling it was a hopeless situation. The author managed to keep my attention and deal with the music theory in such a fashion that I could not wait to see his next topic. I found the approach very practical. In fact, I could immediately apply what I learned and the results were immediate. Still, an enormous amount of information is contained in this book and I am sure I shall refer back to the detail many times in the future. It has also helped me better understand songs that already became hits and the book is full of real examples.

The Blake Legacy Rocks!!!!!

I really enjoyed this book!!!! The series keeps getting better and better, The cover is absolutely delicious. Seth and Morgan are one of my favorite hero/heroines, and there are really great love scenes!!!!! I cant wait to read more of Ms. Laurel's series The Blake Boys.

Love this series!

I love Seth and Morgan! I am so glad that their story is continued which is a rare find. Usually it only glimpses the couple instead of a full story. The story picks up directly where book two left off. I cant wait to see whats going to happen to the other Blake boys. Especially Tate!

My only complaint is I wish the stories were longer!

I was tired of doormats...

I liked the book, especially the fact that the heroine, Brianne, wasn't a doormat like a lot of the "virginal young girls" that romance writers seem to like. She not only held her own but was several paces ahead of the hero! I also liked the fact that the hero, Pierce, wasn't a macho womanizer like those same writers are so fond of. You didn't get the feeling that he thought she was supposed to get down on her knees, eternally greatfull, that he paid the slightest attention to her. And I liked that he was faithfull - even if it was to his dead wife - he showed potential. And lived up to it!
But I especially like the fact that Ms. Palmer included characters from a previous book: "Tate Winthrop" and "Cecily." If I'm not mistaken, they were first introduced in "After Midnight" written under the name of "Susan Kyle." I was intrigued by the glimpses of these two and had wondered what happened to them. Too bad I have to wait until December for the release of "Paper Rose" for their full story!
I've always loved cross-over stories. Speaking of which, does anyone know if there was a book about Brianne's friend "Cara Harvey"? Since she was mentioned several times in this book, with references to her problems with a "gentleman," I was wondering if she had a separate story.

Storyline was Good, Characters Were Mediocre....

My first Palmer book and a little let down. The main characters were somewhat mediocre and flat, especially the hero Pierce. The heroine was much more interesting and I was finding myself hoping something would happen between her and the 'badguy' since he was much more interesting and exciting.
Pierce spent way too much of the book whining about his dead wife and how he can't love again, blah blah blah and I began to get irritated with the strong and fiesty heroine Brianne who kept waiting for the idiot to come around. He didn't deserve her waiting or love. His reasoning was so farfetched and unreal at times that I just shook my head and sighed. I was truly hoping Brianne would slap him a few times and take off with the secondary character Tate. Now HE was a man to wait for, he he he...subsequently he is also in the next book called 'Paper Rose', his story.
Pierce came off as whiny and weak and we were never really sure what he did with the oil business, it was too confusing. The secondary characters were great and I found myself hoping they would take over the story. CIA and other secret organizations played a big role in the plot along with foreign governments, ect. The plot was good and very developed, what was missing and left a big hole was the main characters. They seemed mismatched and misplaced in its complex web. I found myself enjoying the action going on around them and the movements of the secondary characters, even the badguys much more.
'Once in Paris' is a tale about two people who run into each other and fall in love, but neither will admit the mindblowing fact.
Pierce Hutton was too grief stricken and empty to realize there was life after his spouce's death. Coming to his rescue one night in the city, Brianne Martin, an 18 year old kid in school who seems to let him know without words that life can go on.
She was far too young for him and she knew he was too old for her, but their hearts didn't know the difference.
A year later, Brianne is caught in a web of political scandal and her stepfather is about to turn her over to a man who has no scrupples. He simply wants her and will have her at any cost. Never forgetting that night in Paris, Pierce comes to her rescue and leads them into an adventure she never dreamed filled with danger and chaos.
Can she heal his broken soul? Can he save her from a madman bent on destroying her?

Ok for a time filler....

I don't recall ever reading a Diana Palmer story before (I know she has a bunch of them) and I'm not sure I would read another. There was not much wrong with this book per se, but there was not much right with it either. The dialogue was very simple as was the plot. Don't scratch too hard at the surface of this story or you won't hit anything. We have a tortured hero, who truly loved his first wife, and it was refeshing to see that he was faithful in his love. He also had a guilty conscience about a woman who could have been his daughter (though that seemed to just be a front to keep our heroine at arm's length while he mourned his wife). Our heorine was young and impressionable (though at 19 I don't know anyone who is still that naive...today maybe 16) but she was just...well ...there. Everyone loved her and thought she was special, but besides being compassionate, I'm not sure I see all the allure.
Instead of using big print and huge margins, the editor or publisher should have just used normal typeset and published this as a 'series'. This 377 page book shouldn't have been longer that 250 pages.

best way to learn thermo

This is in reference to the 1st edition.

What a great book.

This is the way thermo should be taught!! Don't you hate how thermo is boring and doesn't make any sense? I took a thermo class as an undergrad using a different textbook, and it didn't make any sense. I was constantly lost, trying to catch up by learning things backwards. Most thermo books try to teach you thermo by either one of two horrible methods:
1. reverse-engineer the phase diagram, or some other example.
2. memorize the equations and apply them.

Instead, this book walks you through the derivation of the equations that people use in thermo. It even spells out the mathematics you need to work through the concepts. You don't have to memorize anything. The gradual buildup of knowledge and principles, as ordered in this book, is the only way people like me can learn thermodynamics. I used this textbook in grad school and thermodynamics finally made sense.

YOU MUST endure through the first few chapters before you begin to appreciate the book. If you stop midway, it will be a total waste of your time.

My only grip is that there were numerous typos in the 1st edition, and each reprint had different typos in different places. My version had a typo in one of the state functions which really messed me up. I hope the 2nd edition does not have any of those problems.

Since it is primarily focused on teaching you thermodynamics, I don't think it is very useful as a "quick" reference material. In other words, it teaches you how to fish, but doesn't give you the fish. If you want a reference, I believe there are books with more depth and breadth out there.

I don't think it is worth buying unless you intend to sit down and read through the first ten chapters. The latter chapters are all optional and add some breadth. But really, you are not going to buy this book for its treatment of electrochemistry.

Typos galore

While this book does have a lot of advance topics in thermodynamics relating to material science it is teeming with little errors. The course I used this for started with Kittel's Thermal Physics and switched to DeHoff when we started doing mixtures. The notation is complex (perhaps necessarily). This would be OK except for the fact that Dehoff often makes small mistakes going from one line to the next. These typos will often lead to important equations that are wrong. If you are diligent, you can often spot the errors between lines in a derivation and correct them, but beware--these are so prevalent that I've seen as many as four on one page. Once you've proof-read and edited your book it should make a good reference and you will likely know the material pretty well from scrutinizing every derivation. The content here is good it just should have been edited better.

Best undergrad thermo text for materials science

I have been using this text for a solid state thermodynamics class I am teaching. The manner in which it is organized and structured allows one to sequentially build understanding of the complicated concepts of thermodynamics one layer at a time. For example, from the table of contents one can see a progression from the concepts of thermodynamic equilibrium to one component, multiphase systems, to multicomponent, single phase systems, then to multicomponent, multiphase systems, etc. Each chapter builds upon those that preceded it, and then becomes part of the foundation for those that follow. This organization makes it much easier for the instructor to teach this difficult subject, and I think easier for the student to comprehend it. My only objection is how phase diagrams are introduced in chapters 9 and 10. I think the presentation of the "structure of phase diagrams" in chapter 9 is confusing without the material in the first section of chapter 10. All, in all, I think this is the best undergrad text for thermo in materials science.

Mouthwatering!!!

This is such a FUN book. It is a story about love, deception, family, tradition and... COOKING!
I fell in love with the characters, and was very happy to see leading ladies everywhere!
It was also very nice to be able to have a quick look at old fashioned recipes, and understand the process of creating them.
Finally, this book has enough drama, love and tragedy for a movie... and Im very happy it became one, which, by the way is also very good, and captures the real essence of the book.

Este es un libro muy divertido. Es una historia sobre el amor, la decepcion, la familia, las tradiciones y sobretodo... la cocina!
Me enamore de los personajes y me dio mucho gusto ver a mujeres protagonistas.
Ademas, fue muy interesante el leer sobre recetas antiguas y entender el proceso de creacion de diferentes alimentos.
Finalmente este es un libro con drama, amor y tragedia dignos de una pelicula...y me da mucho gusto que se haya hecho una tan buena, que en verdad capta la esencia del libro.

El mejor libro en espanol que he leido

Cuando empece a leer esta novela, no pense en lo que se trataba. Sabia que era famosoa y que gano muchisimo premios, pero la foto en la portada me asusto, no sabia si era un libro tan romantico que no podia leer.. me equivioque o mejor dicho lei todo en un ratito. ME ENCANTO MUCHISIMO. Aunque hay algunas partes increibles, este libro tiene ideas y muestra la mujer en la manera en que ella existia por mucho tiempo. Lo voy a usar para mi proyecto en ingles, aunque lo lei en espanol. no se muy dificil tampoco. Llevo 5 años ne espanol, y comprendi todo! Ese fue el primer libro que he completado en espanol, y ma hace querer leer mas y mas. LEANLO!

Como Agua Para Chocolate fue el primer libro que lei en espanol. Me gusto la historia, especialmente los presonajes. La autora desarrolla muy profundamente los sentimentos, suenos y deseos de los protagonistas. No podia esperar para ver que iba a pasar en el proximo capitulo. Fue fascinante leer sobre esa epoca y el effecto que tenia en sus vidas. La manera en que la autora ha mezclado la preparacion de la comida con los eventos importantes en las vidas de los personajes me parecio muy especial. Tambien el libro es bueno para los estudiantes de espanol porque es facil para leer y no necesitan traducir cada palabra para entender la idea general. El libro hizo su magia en mi espanol tambien, porque despues de leerlo, pude hablar mucho mejor!!
