This is a great little devotional giving me a Scripture, reflection for my own deeper insight and a prayer for helping me to apply the Scripture. One morning I didn't read my devotional early and noticed before long that I looked forward each day to a new Scripture and application.

George F. Simmons has academic degrees from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California; the University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois; and Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. Male-focused portrait of friends struggling with fatherhood

The king of sprawling, feels-like-autobiography, multi-cast graphic novel soap operas, Alex Robinson, has returned with Our Expanding Universe. It’s dubbed a “spiritual sequel” to his best-known Box Office Poison, and that’s an accurate comparison. The characters aren’t the same, but they’re recognizable in the same ways the BOP cast were. The significant difference is that Our Expanding Universe features older adults. Instead of wondering when their lives will get started, these characters are dealing with impending parenthood and feeling trapped where they’ve ended up.

Robinson’s stark scenes and unflattering caricatures have the feel of a sketchbook, peering in when people aren’t aware they’re being observed (or they might present themselves more optimistically). Like many of the Great American Novels and their explorations of the male psyche this work evokes, the focus is on the guys.

The few female characters aren’t nearly as well-developed or relatable, and sometimes, they descend into cliche. There are some non-guy scenes, but they revolve around family members and pressure to have babies and what the guys are doing. The only chapter with only women even switches from comics to illustrated script (possibly because drawing all their conversations would have made the book twice as long). It stood out to me because Robinson does such a great job keeping his many conversations among the guys visually interesting. That said, if you’re ok knowing this is a portrait of how men deal with parenthood, the portrayals are illuminating when it comes to how a particular male age group struggles with growing up.

The stories are told in a series of chapter vignettes. Billy, manager of a doggy day care, and Marcy are trying to get pregnant, although Billy seems much less interested. His friend Scott and his wife Ritu have a toddler and another on the way. The third guy, Brownie, is single and complaining about first dates. He reviews video games and smokes a lot while contemplating hooking up with his high school crush.

They all live in Brooklyn, so life is about meeting for foursquare and talking about nannies. No matter how old they get, the guys still think about whatever women they see in terms of wanting to get phone numbers and resemblances to previous girlfriends. Ultimately, Robinson does a great job covering all the father’s facets of choosing to reproduce: the stress, the struggle with feeling like an adult, the question of what growing up means, the societal pressure, and even the love.

Our Expanding Universe is an excellent literary graphic novel, demonstrating what can be done with the form to tell mature, challenging stories, albeit in the tradition of male-focused comics. Or you can just enjoy it for discussions like Herschel’s theory of child-raising: “Think of parenthood as a twenty year drug trip. Brilliantly-crafted, but a bit too familiar

I've liked all of Alex Robinson's previous graphic novels, but had mixed feelings about this one. It struck me as an extremely well-crafted version of a story that I've seen many times before. The book revolves around three men, longtime friends, who are struggling with the onset of adult responsibilities. They get together to drink and play video games, wax nostalgic over their freewheeling youth, and stress out over their marriages and children. Many complications ensue, and they learn to cope (or not) with life's challenges. The guys come across as so immature and selfish and irresponsible that I found it hard to care about whether they could turn themselves around. There's certainly some truth to the cliche of the overgrown man-child who struggles to become a functional adult, but it's a trope that's been run into the ground lately, and I didn't feel like Robinson had much new to add.

On the other hand, on a purely technical level, the book is a masterpiece of storytelling. It's 250 pages of nothing but conversations, but there's not a visually dull moment in it. There's all kinds of clever and imaginative staging, and the characters are really well "acted" -- their body language and expressions reveal as much as their dialogue. Robinson's eye for background detail really brings the Brooklyn setting to life. So I definitely enjoyed it on that level, even if the storyline didn't grab me.

I would say, if you're interested in a really well-drawn slice-of-life story, and aren't completely burned out on tales of "Peter Pan Syndrome", then the book is definitely worth picking up.

It started slow, but slowly hooked me in with great art and a story of how our lives can change

'Our Expanding Universe' by Alex Robinson is a slice of life graphic novel about growing up, changing and making room in your life for what's important.

The book follows three men named Scotty, Billy and Brownie. Billy is our main character and he's got trepidations about having a child with his wife. Scotty is about to have his second kid, but he's got some other secrets that he's keeping, even from his friends. Brownie is divorced without kids and happy in his life of video games and pot smoking. We get to know the women also, and the stories evolve and change. Throughout the comics are themes of cosmic events which show how how small our lives are and how life goes on. There is a sequence in a planetarium that I just loved.

It's a slow moving story, and I wasn't sure aboutit at first, but as the story progressed, it hooked me in. It's probably not that original, but Alex Robinson's cartoon style was really great. It's probably not for everyone, but I found myself really liking it.

Bemused

I do not know why Gaillard wrote this book, and I do not know why I read it (with pleasure). I guess the author wanted to stress the difficulties of breaking into an all-male enclave. I guess I wanted to learn something about the emergence of the Standard Model. I liked the book, although I may be biased by the fact that I am an academic, and the book is an odyssey of academic schmoozing.
I certainly did not have to be told about the male domination of academia forty years ago. In all my years as an undergrad at the University of Pennsylvania and the Sorbonne, and my graduate training in economics at Harvard, I never had a female instructor. The only books I read by women were in economic history and development economics. When I was a first-year Assistant Professor at Harvard, I received a letter inviting my wife to join the Harvard Wives Club. Needless to say, there was no Harvard Husbands club.
Gaillard (which means "hardy" in French) spends lots of time on her personal life, which is okay with me. She also talks a lot about faculty politics and how she was mistreated. Okay. But I don't know an academic who couldn't relate with relish stories of being mistreated. Really boring. Who cares?
I recommend this book because it found it fun reading, I did learn some history of science, and Gaillard is a pleasant writer with a sunny disposition.

A Dose of Modern Physics and Perserverence

Some modern atomic physics knowledge is helpful. I found the history of standard model physics presented at about the right physics level for me, a former high physics and chemistry teacher. The thread of chauvinism Gaillard presents throughout the book is enlightening, but also disturbing.

About the Author

David Reed’s mission is to teach all people how to connect with their own musical creativity and enjoy improvising and composing their own music. While his own musical background is primarily in jazz music, his approach to teaching improvisation is universal and applies to all styles of music.

During more than 10 years of teaching musical improvisation for all instruments, David became increasingly frustrated with mainstream teaching methods that consist almost entirely of telling students what to play. He began to imagine a different kind of improvisation method that would empower students to explore the world of modern harmony and discover it for themselves, leading them to the same deep understanding of music that is enjoyed by the greatest improvisers in the world.

The first, last and only book on music you ever really need.

Innate musicality has been "hard-wired" into all humans from birth. Some people claim to be tone deaf, but this is actually quite rare. All humans have the ability to understand music, which is a hearing art, where sounds are used to create moods and feelings and responses in the mind of the listener. Music is not a word...music is based solely in sound, and it can only be truly experienced by hearing and listening. There are only 12 tones or sounds in western music, a maximum of 12 notes, regardless of how complex sounding or advanced the music may be. And nearly all music only uses 7 notes in any single piece of music.

This "IFR" system lays out a brilliant and simple method for teaching you how to recognize notes, and melodies and harmonies, because you will finally understand the depth and meaning of these sounds. With this method, you will come to deeply know what all 12 notes are doing musically and how to recognize and move them around in your mind. This makes the hyper-technical "Modal Theory" much easier to understand, because when you strip away the complex instruction of modal theory it's application is actually fairly straight-forward and simple.

This book takes bits and pieces from different sources, but reorganizes everything into a cohesive whole that is holistic and that makes "musical" sense. Music is an experiential art that is dense with meaning and feeling. A picture is worth a thousand words because pictures contain so much information and detail. We could waste hours using language trying to describe details in a picture, or we could just show the picture and let someone experience it. Similarly, music uses sounds to create experiences and the only way to learn that is by experiencing it and internalizing it.

This method uses a brilliant trick of letting music teach you its own nifty and precious little secrets. There is no way of really capturing that in words. But exercises can be designed and performed that give the student the experience of what music is really saying. It is like finally knowing how to speak a foreign language, because you finally get all the grammar and vocabulary and how they construct meaning. With this method you finally will be able to understand and construct meaning with music, which is the highest form of art in music.

Review from an acoustic guitar player with two years' experience

David Reed's approach to melody, harmony, tonal center, chords - to appreciating the learning of music in general - is truly freeing. My mom was a high school music teacher and piano teacher, so I have some understanding of theory through osmosis (I didn't much care about music theory at the time, as I was a drummer), but everything David writes in this book about the frustration of memorizing theory/chord diagrams/scale patterns on guitar vs. this book's approach is absolutely on target in my own personal experience. My wife has zero musical background, and even she was able to understand - and replicate - the "magic key" of the major scale on our keyboard (as described in the book) instantly. She was simply amazed.

Our 9 year old son started piano lessons a few months ago, and while he tolerates theory and sheet music, the bulk of his time playing is recreating songs in his head via trial-and-error. I think kids naturally approach learning music in the manner David writes about, before all the strict practice regimen on traditional theory sucks the joy out of it for many of them. When my son heard me showing my wife the major scale, he walked over and played it all over the keyboard on his own. I asked him how he knew what he was doing, and his answer was illustrative - he said he just plays what sounds right in his head. This echoes a major sentiment of the book.

In short, this book was a revelation. By my read, it is not intended to be a direct 1-for-1 replacement of more traditional approaches to musical training - you still need to practice technique at your instrument - but rather it is a supplement, and it has heightened my personal enjoyment of learning and *experiencing* my guitar playing multiple times over.

Improvise for real

I had the opportunity two years ago to study improvisation with David Reed, the author of this book. I have to say that the Improvise for Real method truly opened my mind. I was frustrated with the music classes and methods I had tried because they seemed incomprehensible. I was already composing my own songs but I felt very limited. I didn't feel like a "real" musician because I didn't really understand what I was doing and I had no way to expand it.

But I was surprised by how easy and practical David's method is. It teaches you truly "see" the basic elements of music so that you can understand them. It shows you how to translate the music that you love and feel inside you. You can even learn to recognize every single note of any song you hear, and immediately play it in any key without sheet music (if you want to). David starts with the premise that everything you hear comes from just seven notes, and this gives you hope and motivation to learn to recognize these seven notes in the music all around you.

In other words, the method brings you closer to music rather than farther away (as so many improvisation methods seem to do). The path David shows is in fact a return to a more natural and innocent relationship with music, in which we hear it, understand it and create it without having any need for rules about what notes to play. In this way, it literally teaches you how to play the music you imagine.

The focus of David's method is inward. You learn to clarify your own sensations and recognize the music in your memories, your favorite songs, and also the music that you imagine and create. In fact, this kind of learning lets you explore music by yourself with total freedom. Once you learn how to use the method, you can continue learning on your own for your whole life.

The Improvise for Real method is totally different from the typical approach to learning harmony and I think it should be implemented in every serious music school. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there is now a book with this method. I encourage everyone interested in music to take a look.

Aged just eight and weighing just under three stone, she was diagnosed as anorexic. For the next eight years, Nikki was in and out of institutions—seven in total—during which time she attempted suicide twice and had to be sedated up to four times a day so that she could be force-fed. At one point, she was sedated for fourteen days while doctors sewed a tube into her stomach, through which she was fed in order to get her weight out of the critical range. Nikki admits that she knew every anorexic's trick in the book: from breaking into hospital kitchens to water down full-fat milk, altering her diet sheet and switching name tags on food to ensure that she received smaller amounts, to even stuffing a door-stop down her trousers before a weigh-in. The extremes that she went to in order to avoid eating and find ways to exercise excessively shocked doctors who have worked in the field for years. As Nikki says, “I've always wanted to be the best at everything I do, so I had to be the best anorexic—and I was.” This is the heart-rending and powerful story of a girl who lost her childhood but was brave enough to finally admit that she wanted to live again. With searing honesty, Nikki recounts her long and painful road to recovery, how she has had to come to terms with the long-term ramifications of her illness, how she coped with being in the Big Brother house and how she uses her new-found fame to promote awareness of eating disorders and to help those who are suffering from similar problems. This compelling book tells the story of an incredible journey.

About the Author
Nikki Grahame is the author of the book Fragile: The True Story of my Lifelong Battle with Anorexia.  Between eight and nineteen years old, Nikki was in and out of hospitals and institutions as she battled with anorexia nervosa. At one point, her weight was so dangerously low that she went into a coma; one of the doctors treating her said that hers was the worst case of anorexia he had seen in 32 years. Although she will never be "cured" of the illness, Nikki made the decision that she wanted to live her life again and has not looked back since. Her time as a contestant in Big Brother 7 made her a household name and, since leaving the house, Nikki has established a career in the media. She has written columns for OK!, the Sun and More magazine and has been a presenter on Big Brother spin-off BBLB. Nikki devotes a lot of her spare time to increasing awareness of eating disorders and hopes that by sharing her life story, she will help others who fall victim.

Possibly the best book I've read on Anorexia

The beginning was tough for me to get into, but that if normal of me for most books.
This book was incredibly detailed, and I must admit at times triggering.
I admire the strength of Nikki to bear her life in the hopes that it will help others struggling.
Nikki's been through hell and back and she is still fighting, it's admirable.

One of the most comprehensive stories of anorexia I have ever read

I am a previous sufferer of anorexia nervosa and this is an excellent account of one persons fight with the disorder. The story is so accurate in illustrating the total torture the anorexic mind set has on the individual. I couldn't put this book down.

Good book, very matter of fact. Nicki is the perfect example of anorexia being the "bastard child of vanity and self loathing." At times it seems as though she is proud of how sick she got. Overall good, easy read.
