Lots of Nice Pics; Lean on the Meat n' Potatoes

It's an ok book for railfans or kids who are generally less interested in the technical and mechanical aspects and just simply want to learn more about GEVOs. However, I spent several years in locomotive maintenance/repair at a Class I railroad and there are many statements that provide a glossed over explanation (re: how the engineer "tells" Locotrol to either go in to CTE or FTE; there is a little more to it than an engineer simply speaking to a Harris Box) or are just plain wrong (re: instrumentation in the GE test cars; nowadays loco monitoring is performed with a laptop in the cab. The test car merely provides a place for the GE Reps to sleep/rest, watch TV or snack on Tombstone Pizzas).

Nice book. I bought this used and it was in fantastic condition. None of the pages where bent, torn etc and the slip cover was the same. The book is very thorough and covers more variants of this train than I knew. Very well laid out. The pictures are just incredible. IF you collect the GE 'GEVO' locomotives this is a great book to have as a reference guide.

Not a romance but ok for a short

it was ok but not ok. it was decent writing but not real romance story. yeah the little twink finds his mate, but really just nothing. in my opinion the chemistry was just not there. it seemed more sex than anything, really being taken by the werebear was just that. he was taken and then connected to this bearman that it was stupid. anyway was ok but not a romance

This needs to become a movie!

'Leaving Brogado' is classic adventure story-telling at its best. Ostensibly a warbook it is in fact a riveting tale of the private war waged between two strong-willed Marines, one an urban black the other a rural white, as they fight to survive against their common foe the North Vietnamese Army.

The tension just continues to escalate from Bootcamp to the battlefield, and the authenticity of the warzone backdrop can only have come from an author who was indeed a combat veteran himself. It's near-impossible to put the book down as every twist & turn plays back into the central theme in such a way that it makes the story stronger as it goes.

This is something like the movie 'Platoon' only much more intense. And more realistic.

TEXAS MARINE'S STORY

Before he passed away, celebrated Vietnam airwar author Marshall Harrison wrote of a character from Brogado, Texas. The man, Beauford T. Adams, was a combat Marine in Vietnam who survived hellish circumstances with a huge street-wise black man he vowed to kill. Harrison is a clever writer who depicts the life of combat Marines, who spend weeks in the bush, with great clarity and pathos. Though scarred physically and emotionally, after discharge Adams returns to Texas, earns a degree and eventually a lot of money. He dabbles in politics but is too crusty to remain in office.
Harrison's wife and fellow pilot, Mary Ann, recently found and published this gripping story.

Vietnam, West Texas style

Stories from the war in Vietnam often come down to the way young men handle the stress of combat, how they bond with their buddies, what they do to endure.
Good stories include the authentic feel of that jungle war, the smell of cordite and the bugs and the rain and the triple canopy and the fear that grips a soldier's stomach when he hears the enemy crawling towards him in the night.
This is that type of good story. Told in an easy to read, sometimes humorous, cleverly structured way that keeps the reader involved, we follow a young man from West Texas into the Marines, through boot camp and into the jungles of South Vietnam just below the DMZ to rage hand to hand combat against hard core NVA.
Harrison write in a way that conveys hurt and fear and danger when he saddles this straight forward young cowboy with a conniving inter-city black Marine from Detroit out together in LPs and LRRPs. The good guys are likeable, the bad guys multidimensional. The end is not predictable.
Fast read. Good entertainment. Authentic war story. Deserves the top shelf on Vietnam War reading. Absolutely Five Stars.

About the Author
Victor Thorn founded Sisyphus Press in the fall of 2000, and is the author of twelve books, as well as ten other chapbooks. Understanding biblical true history strengthens your believe in Immanuel

This book presents an intricate linkages between historic events and stories, in a biblical context, in a way that really makes you think on the truth. It must have been written by a very literate and intelligent writer.

Especially the "truths" of the Old Testament, usually taken from Sumerian, Egyptian or Indian sources, neatly rewritten for Israel, are taken into question.

What remains after reading this book is enormous respect for the author and a sense for what you still can believe of the Bible, and this strengthens your belief in this way.
Especially the words of Jesus/Jeshua/Immanuel become more the single source of truth, and his truth sets you free.

About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

The Birth of Bukowski

HAM ON RYE is a slight , entertaining novel that is often funny.It is served up as a slice of autobiography but I'd take that with a huge grain of salt.It's quite hard to believe some of the events depicted.It covers Bukowski's alter ego from childhood through age 21.I'd say the later part of the book dealing with him after he graduates from high school is far and away the most interesting part of the book. Here we see the Bukowski we have come to know , if not love.

One aspect of the novel that is worth attention is the world it depicts.The book is set in Los Angeles between approximately 1923 and 1941.You wouldn't know the film industry or more broadly ,the entertainment industry existed.No one here is an actor , would be actor , singer , dancer or screen writer.For that matter , no one is a cop or detective.The people are lower class whites who are often European immigrants or their children who wound up in Los Angeles instead of Cleveland.There are no New York strivers,Mid west farmers daughters or Okies.You only get one glimpse of the rich , near the end of the book.This isn't the LA of Beverly Hills.It's ham on rye country.In other words , it's Los Angeles as you usually don't see it in fiction or movies , especially those covering the time period of the book.

A little too gloomy for me

This book is an interesting take on an autobiography. Mr Bukowski shares his youth as though it's happening to someone else, specifically Henry Chinaski. The writing is blunt - you won't find any SAT-style words in this book.

The book starts with Henry's first memory at age 3. There are a few key memories in the following years of Henry's life, but the story doesn't really start until the 3rd grade. The Great Depression shaped his childhood into something greatly depressing. I kept hoping something fortuitous would happen to Henry. Because Henry is basically fictitious, I wanted resolution to some if not all his problems. I wanted him to get a girl. I wanted him to get justice from his father. I wanted him to become a great athlete. But most of all I wanted him to be happy and successful.

As Henry grew older and I came to realize no happy ending was in store for him, I became disgusted by his behavior. I did not approve of violence and alcohol as resolution to problems.

5th grade Henry was my favorite. Specifically his interpretation of President Hoover's visit to Los Angeles. The English teacher wanted everyone to attend the president's visit and write an essay on it. I believe that Henry would've gone if he had been allowed. Instead he wrote an essay about an imagined visit and it was so glorious that the teacher read it to the class. His description of the motorcade, the President catering to the crowd, and the band playing patriotic and upbeat music was simply marvelous. Even at this young age, Henry becomes drunk on his own words. His violent streak also started to bud as he observes one kid looking as though Henry punched him in the face.

I found Henry's journey into adulthood fascinating. As disgusted as I was with his behavior, I just kept reading.

Disturbing but recognize quality

I wish the star rating were different, because I did NOT LIKE this book, but I recognize that it was a great book. And it was a terrible book. The only remotely likable character in the book was the nurse who drained the pus from Henry's boils. Each of the others were awful, mean, frighteningly odd, or otherwise the sort of people you'd (or at least I'd) rather not have the occasion to meet.

Henry likes no one, picks fights with nearly everyone, and drinks to oblivion whenever he has the means. His acquaintances sexually satisfy a dog, pee in a family's milk bottle, and beat each other bloody. His parents are neglectful at the best and abusive at the worst. It's a terrible existence, and it appears to be autobiographical.

I appreciated this book because it exposed me to a way of life I know nothing about, but the truth is, I was fairly content in my ignorance. I wish there were no experiences like those described, and lived, by Burkowski.

About the Author
Amir Levine, M.D. is an adult, child, and adolescent psychiatrist and neuroscientist. He graduated from the residency program at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University and for the past few years Amir has been conducting neuroscience research at Columbia under the mentorship of Nobel Prize Laureate Eric Kandel. Amir also has a passion for working with patients and it is in this context, while working with mothers and children in a therapeutic nursery, that he first discovered the power of attachment theory. His clinical work together with his deep understanding of the brain from a neuroscientist’s perspective contribute to his appreciation of attachment theory and its remarkable effectiveness in helping to heal patients. Amir lives in New York City.
Rachel Heller, M.A. studied at Columbia University with some of the most prominent scholars in the field of social psychology. She now works with families and couples as a psychologist in private practice. Rachel lives in Israel.

BEST RELATIONSHIP BOOK AFTER 28 YEARS OF MARRIAGE.....

Top notch book (doesn't work well on Kindle due to diagrams that you cannot see) for SINGLES (learn about emotional attachment style before you commit) and for married couples trying to understand their relationship. This book has been a TREMENDOUS help in uncovering why my husband and I have struggled so deeply for so many years. We had been in and out of counseling for over 25 years...finally 3 years ago a counselor brought up attachment styles. A huge light went on for us. Thus, this book has been a MAJOR breakthrough in understanding what is going on. It does require commitment to read and work out the ideas, but we finally have understanding, clarity and thus, hope. We have more books on marriage and relationships than one should have (Christian and secular) and this tops them all --by far. I cannot recommend enough that you start with this book as foundational knowledge and then add on others such as Harville Hendrix's Getting the Love You Want. We did it backwards due to lack of knowledge of attachment styles and thus, none of the other books were of any long term help. This book explains so many dynamics that I have never read about in other books or heard of in counseling. I have ordered 2 for my adult single children- I only hope they will read them and save themselves much heartache and confusion.

Very Limited in Its View

As a mental health professional, I was looking for a book on healing attachment problems and that is NOT this book. It is a very useful read for someone single or ready to get out of a stuck relationship, seeking to gain insight and make better attachment- driven relationship decisions. I give it a low rating because of its premise that virtually all your emotional relationship problems will be solved by being with a securely attached romantic partner. While I believe that a great amount of drama and pain can probably be avoided by this approach; I believe it is superficial at best and does not bring healing to the wounds that created anxious or avoidant attachment styles (which remain with you until healed), and so I see this type of an approach as a bandaid or stepping stone.
In order to find a secure base; a refuge from the storms of life, we cannot rely solely upon another but must find and reclaim a home within ourselves, this is because no one can provide all of what we need or all of the time. To those seeking deep healing, I recommend instead: Reconciliation: Healing the Inner Child by Thich Nhat Hahn, and You are Not Your Brain.
I would only recommend this book to someone securely attached who is dating an anxiously attached person and seeking guidance or to someone single feeling frustrated in the dating pool who is only looking for guidance on selecting the best mate.

Biased views on attachment styles

Like some other reviewers, I found this book surprisingly biased against avoidant people and very sympathetic toward anxious types. I would think that a neuroscientist and social psychologist would show less bias. That being said, there was a lot of interesting and helpful material covered about the different attachment styles.

Jeremiah is one of the major prophets in the Tanakh, and one of the most interesting. Few prophets have been as disparaged, as denounced and disgraced, as Jeremiah. The man fated to be the prophet of destruction tried desperately to eradicate social injustice and corruption, to save the Temple from the impending doom, to be heard. But to no avail: Jeremiah, who so loved his people, was a lonely man, an outcast-persecuted by monarchs, hated by the masses, rejected by all. The prophecy that began with a clear vision of redemption ended in the wailing of Lamentations.

Jeremiah

As a catholic i found this book by Rabbi Lau as very helpful indeed, i can now say i understand the book of Jeremiah much clearer now. I have also bought Rabbi Lau past books on the Sages [3 books] very interesting. For me Rabbi Lau is a great teacher and i look forward to his forth coming titles.Rabbi Lau is a light onto the nations.

A new approach to understanding the Prophets

Jewish tardition teaches that there were many more prophets and prophesies in the history of Israel than are actually recorded in the Bible. Only those prophesies that have enduring lessons have been recorded. Yet, the reader of the bible often struggles to understand the words and meaning of the latter prophets and certainly looks for ways in which they may be deemed relevant today. R Binyamin Lau has written a book that attempts to to accomplish that task. By rearranging the chapters of the book of Jeremiah into what he believes is the proper chronological order, R Lau, gives meaning and context to the enigmatic words of the prophet. While one can accept or reject the particulars of R Lau's analysis, the approach is refreshing and interesting. The parallels to modern day Israel's political situation give the reader much food for thought Still, I would have liked to see some discussion as to how R Lau understands the thematic purpose under which the chapters were arranged by the original biblical author.
